RV camping at Abilene State Park gives you the perfect opportunity to visit Abilene, just a mere 16 miles to the southwest of the park.

Make some time to visit Cisco, a place with lots of small-town charm, located about an hour’s drive to the east of the park. The bustling metropolis of Fort Worth is about two and a half hours east of Abilene State Park and is a great place to visit after spending time state park RV camping.

Getting Outdoors

RV camping at Abilene State Park is a great way to reconnect with your family while enjoying the great outdoors. The park boasts an amazing swimming pool that was built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Spend hot summer days lazing around the pool or take a dip in nearby Lake Abilene. When open, a lifeguard is on duty at the pool. However, you'll be swimming at your own risk in the lake. Children should not be allowed to swim in the lake unsupervised.

Pack your fishing gear in your rental RV and cast your line into Buffalo Wallow Pond or Lake Abilene. Professional and amateur anglers enjoy spending time at Abilene State Park. Both the lake and pond are well stocked with catfish, bass, and crappie. The state of Texas does require anglers to obtain a fishing license when they plan on fishing from the shores in a state park.

Bring your boat, canoe, or kayak when you're RV camping at Abilene State Park. Lake Abilene is a no-wake lake; therefore, any boat with a motor cannot exceed idle speed. The park rents kayaks and canoes from mid-April through November. Be sure to review the park’s rules and regulations regarding boating on Lake Abilene before you enter the water.

Camping at Abilene State Park

State park RV camping can be an extremely peaceful way to recharge your batteries and appreciate the beauty in nature. Abilene State Park has several different campgrounds, including Brushy Trail, Oak Grove, and Pecan Grove. Three sites come with full-hookups, while the remaining 39 individual sites come with water and electric hookups. Restrooms and shower facilities are located near each campground. Each campsite has a picnic table, fire ring, and grill.

If you can't reserve a spot at Abilene State Park, you can check out the Abilene KOA, only about half an hour south of the park. This KOA offers 50-amp service, Wi-Fi, cable TV, and laundry room. Campers can also enjoy a snack bar, purchase firewood and propane, and bring their four-legged companions. A dog park is conveniently located on the KOA grounds.

Camp in an RV near Abilene State Park at the Whistle Stop RV Resort located in Abilene, also about a 30-minute drive from Abilene State Park. There are two laundry facilities at this resort, along with a clubhouse. Whistle Stop offers private showers and restrooms for campers. Hookups with either 30 or 50-amp service are available.

Exploring the Area

While visiting Abilene State Park, take some time to check out the area around the park. Fort Griffin State Historic Site is just over an hour northeast of the park and is a great place to explore. Fort Griffin was in operation from 1867 to 1881 and was one of the western defensive forts used to keep enemies at bay. You can view the remains of the fort, including the barracks, mess hall, bakery, and first sergeant’s quarters. Visitors to the Fort Griffin State Historic Site can also view the official state of Texas Longhorn herd.

Stop into historic Buffalo Gap, the original Taylor County Seat in 1878. Buffalo Gap was one the settlements along the Southern Overland Mail Route, or better known as the Butterfield Stage Route. You can wander through this quaint town and imagine times gone by where stagecoaches rumbled through town and herds of longhorns were herded down Main Street on their way to market.

Visit the Abilene Zoo while you're RV camping at Abilene State Park. There are more than 1,000 animals housed at the Abilene Zoo, and you can get up close and personal with many of them. Check out the Giraffe Safari, Reptile House, Caribbean Cove, and Elm Creek Backyard. The zoo's store has numerous souvenirs to memorialize your visit, and the Watering Hole has snacks, treats, and drinks for visitors to enjoy.
