Discover Lake Colorado City State Park

Slightly northwest of the center of Texas, near Snyder, Big Spring, and Colorado City, is where you will find Lake Colorado City State Park. This park is a breeze to visit when you book an RV in Mitchell County, and onsite state park RV campgrounds make it easy to stay the night in your rental RV. Lake Colorado City State Park covers approximately 500 acres and is located on land that is leased from a local utility company for 99 years at a time. The park originally opened in 1972 and is located on Morgan Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River.

Lake Colorado, which is on Morgan Creek, was originally built in 1949 to provide cooling for the nearby Morgan Creek Power Plant. Water was also used by the nearby Colorado City for a time, but times have changed, and now the lake’s only purpose is for recreation. This part of Texas isn’t as dry as you may first think, and the area surrounding this park is well known for the hardy Mesquite trees that grow near the lake.

Getting Outdoors

Motorhome camping at Lake Colorado City State Park will give you plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors, and with a wide array of activities to seek out, you’ll need more than one day to experience them all. Fishing is one of the most popular activities at Lake Colorado, and with more than 1,600 acres of surface area to explore, there are plenty of spots to try out. The most common fish caught in the lake include largemouth bass, sunfish, and channel catfish. A fishing license is required to fish here, so be sure to sort yours out while arranging the details on your RV rental.

Hiking at the park also draws plenty of campers, as there are gorgeous views of the lake and natural wildlife to spot while on the trail. Most of the trails in the area focus on the lake, and some of them lead to spectacular views over the water from breaks in the surrounding Mesquite trees. Also, while hiking, keep your eyes peeled for birds and other wildlife, as more than 300 different bird species have been spotted in the park in the past.

Enjoying the water also draws campers to the park, as RV camping at Lake Colorado City State Park is a fabulous way to swim and boat in Lake Colorado. There are no lifeguards on duty unless otherwise posted, but guests are still welcome to swim at their own risk. Additionally, personal watercraft like kayaks and canoes are allowed and can be launched with ease from the gentle shores. Boats are also welcome, just be sure to respect no-wake zones near the swimming areas on the lake.
