With Kiptopeke State Park located right on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, it's no surprise that many of the most popular outdoor activities on offer involve the water. If you visit in the summer months and you're keen to escape the heat, the park offers two unguarded swimming beaches on the bay. The northern beach, which is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, is around half a mile long and the perfect spot to don your swimwear and splash around. The south beach is best suited to a wide range of other beach activities. Boating, fishing, and crabbing are all permitted alongside swimming here, while leashed pets are also welcome to enjoy a stroll on the sand. If you remember to pack your fishing rod, you'll also find plenty to keep you entertained during your stay. Kiptopeke State Park is a famed fishing destination, with the concrete ships just off shore promising a hive of underwater activity. There's a big, lighted fishing pier, and you can cast a line from the pier without needing a fishing license. However, if you're fishing straight from the shore, you'll need a valid Virginia saltwater fishing license. And if you want to get out on the water, a boat launch is provided. Kayaks and paddleboards are available for rent from the camp store. Water-based activities aside, the other main activity worth enjoying during your Kiptopeke State Park camping getaway is hiking. A five-mile trail network winds its way through the park, including many boardwalks that allow visitors to explore the local dune system without impacting the environment. Baywoods Trail, which wanders through pretty hardwood forest and promises excellent bird watching opportunities, is a favorite hiking route for campers.
