Getting Outdoors

With Kiptopeke State Park located right on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, it's no surprise that many of the most popular outdoor activities on offer involve the water. If you visit in the summer months and you're keen to escape the heat, the park offers two unguarded swimming beaches on the bay.

The northern beach, which is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, is around half a mile long and the perfect spot to don your swimwear and splash around. The south beach is best suited to a wide range of other beach activities. Boating, fishing, and crabbing are all permitted alongside swimming here, while leashed pets are also welcome to enjoy a stroll on the sand.

If you remember to pack your fishing rod, you'll also find plenty to keep you entertained during your stay. Kiptopeke State Park is a famed fishing destination, with the concrete ships just off shore promising a hive of underwater activity.

There's a big, lighted fishing pier, and you can cast a line from the pier without needing a fishing license. However, if you're fishing straight from the shore, you'll need a valid Virginia saltwater fishing license. And if you want to get out on the water, a boat launch is provided. Kayaks and paddleboards are available for rent from the camp store.

Water-based activities aside, the other main activity worth enjoying during your Kiptopeke State Park camping getaway is hiking. A five-mile trail network winds its way through the park, including many boardwalks that allow visitors to explore the local dune system without impacting the environment. Baywoods Trail, which wanders through pretty hardwood forest and promises excellent bird watching opportunities, is a favorite hiking route for campers.

Camping at Kiptopeke State Park

If you want to go RV camping in Kiptopeke State Park, book an RV in Northampton County and find a site in the park's campground. There are 86 full-hookup sites and 47 tent sites on offer here, with half of them available for reservation in advance and the other half assigned upon arrival.

Able to accommodate rental RVs of up to 40 feet, the full-hookup sites offer 20, 30, and 50-amp electrical connections and come with their own picnic table and fire ring. Restrooms and hot showers are easily accessible, while some (but not all) sites receive decent shade to help you stay cool in summer.

Sites are generally level and set in leafy surroundings, with firewood available for sale from the camp store and camp host site. Leashed pets are also welcome within the campground, but take note that they're not allowed at the north beach swimming area.

Finally, if you're traveling with friends or family who aren't keen on camping, Kiptopeke State Park also offers a bunkhouse, four yurts, and several cabins.

Exploring the Area

When you're ready to bring your Kiptopeke State Park RV camping adventure to an end, you don't have to head home straight away. This beautiful coastal region of Virginia offers plenty more worth experiencing and enjoying, so make sure you allow time for a few extra stops along the way.

If you'd prefer to explore a small historic village, nearby Cape Charles has a museum, art, gallery, and antique shops, not to mention a quaint charm.

Of course, if you'd rather head for a major center, you could be in Norfolk in just 45 minutes. While you're there, make sure to spend a day wandering around Nauticus, a fascinating maritime museum with something to interest visitors of all ages.

There's lots to explore no matter which direction you travel, so rent an RV near Kiptopeke State Park and get ready for an adventure you'll never forget.
