Hidden away in the Shenandoah Valley, the vibrant and upbeat city of Staunton is an artistic paradise. Filled with theaters, concert venues, and street art, the city definitely has a vibe and culture of its own. The city predates the country, having first been settled in 1732. Staunton served as the regional capital during the colonial period and, after the American Revolution, served as the capital of Virginia. Today, Staunton is still a hotbed in Virginia, a popular destination for those looking to get away for a weekend, or even use as a home base while exploring the beauty of the Appalachians. When you rent an RV in Staunton, you will be able to escape to your own little Appalachian paradise.

If you’re looking to park the motorhome rental in Staunton for a while and explore the town itself, BRITE Bus Transit Services operates several routes in the town center.

When you book an RV in Staunton, you will be able to explore this independent city and enjoy the various cultural institutions as well as natural paradises that await in west-central Virginia.

The Great Outdoors

Just to the northeast of town is Shenandoah National Park near Waynesboro. This paradise among the mountains and valleys of central Virginia offers locals and visitors both an escape into the wilderness of the Eastern United States. With roughly 200,000 acres of preserved wilderness ready to explore, you can journey along the 500 miles of trails and travel to magnificent waterfalls, up peaks and down valleys, or even along 105 miles of the Appalachian Trail. If you are planning on traveling during the fall, the Shenandoah Valley comes alive with the same brilliant shades of red, orange, and yellow you'd expect to see in New England. You’ll be able to get lost in your own colorful world as you explore this jewel of Virginia.

A short drive west of town is the Highland Wildlife Management Area in Monterey. If you want a wilderness destination that is more of a local spot, you can spend your day at the WMA. Just over 14,000 acres, the park is made up of three tracts of land, with each centered on a different local mountain. You can spend your day challenging yourself as you hike up the mountain faces, each a varying degree of difficulty. If you’d rather enjoy the outdoors in a more leisurely way, you can try your hand at fishing the Bullpasture River, which cuts through most of the WMA.

Another nearby Appalachian paradise worth exploring is the Monongahela National Forest in Elkins. Just under one million acres, this West Virginia crown jewel is also a no-radio zone, meaning that there is very little technological interference to try to keep the area as naturally pristine as possible. This is especially important because the park encompasses, on average, more biodiversity per square acre than almost any other national forest in the country. With dozens of trails to choose from to guide you through this expansive and magnificent forest, you are sure to come across outlooks and vistas that will take your breath away. Whether you enjoy looking down on valleys, picturesque mountain streams, towering forests, or fields of flowers, Monongahela will have what you are looking for.

RV Parks

Explore the City

When you book a campervan rental in Staunton, you may want to aside some time to explore the city. With so much culture and history packed into this community, there is plenty to see.

Staunton is home to Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president of the United States. So, it only makes sense that the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library is at home in downtown Staunton, in the family home of Woodrow Wilson. You can tour this historic and well-preserved home or spend some time out in the gardens around the grounds. You can also learn about Wilson’s terms as president and how he helped guide the country through World War I.

After your days filled with hiking and exploring, you may want a relaxing night out on the town. You can grab dinner at one of the many local eateries and then catch a show at the American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriars Playhouse. Modeled after the historic winter theater of Shakespeare’s famed acting troupe, the ASC uses the space to produce a variety of classic plays.

Photography enthusiasts can spend part of the day at The Camera Heritage Museum. Here, you can learn about the history of photography, see antique cameras, and even see old photographs. You can also lead yourself on a self-guided audio tour of the museum.

Staunton is filled with so many local restaurants and breweries that you can do a self-guided culinary tour of the city and get all of the flavors of Appalachia and the Mid-Atlantic. You might also want to seek out a farm-to-table restaurant; Virginia produces dozens of crops thanks to its relatively mild climate, so you are sure to find yourself a truly unforgettable and locally grown meal.

When you're ready to restock and refuel the Staunton camper rental, you won’t need to go far to find gas stations and grocery stores for everything that you need.
