Lake Koshkonong is nestled into the Southern Savannah Region of Wisconsin, an area that is known for its picturesque landscapes and diverse wildlife. Flanked by Interstate 90 on one side, and Highway 26 on the other, this well-connected lake can be accessed easily from all corners of the state. Even better, with the busy cities of Madison and Milwaukee lie less than an hours drive away. Lake Koshkonong is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Lake Koshkonong was originally constructed as part of the Indianford Dam in the mid 19th century. Although its primary use was to provide flood control and irrigation for the nearby communities, the lake quickly became known as the go-to place for a spot of outdoor recreation. Today, many choose to book an RV in Lake Koshkonong to enjoy a weekend of lakeside motorhome camping.
Avid anglers camping near Lake Koshkonong will be glad to know that fishing in the lake is lucrative all year round. This is thanks to the Wisconsin DNR that stocks the lake with perch, largemouth bass, and bluegill amongst many others. Although there is a 2-fish daily bag limit, and a 26-inch length limit on northern pike, fishers can practice their skills with a day of catch-and-release fishing. Although fishing is worthwhile almost anywhere on the lake, head to Stinkers Bay or Carcajou Point for some of the best chances to catch the trophy-sized walleye. Alternatively, those camping with an RV during the winter months can enjoy an afternoon of ice fishing from the shores of Lake Koshkonong.
Lake Koshkonong is also a great stopover for anyone that is camping with their own boat in tow. Due to the lake’s shallow waters, kayaking and canoeing are the best way to explore the lake; simply launch your boat on the waters using one of the four public boat ramps and enjoy. During the cooler months, when the water levels are a little higher, water sports enthusiasts can often be seen water-skiing or jet skiing in the middle of Lake Koshkonong. Anyone RV camping at Lake Koshkonong without their own vessel can rent a kayak, paddleboard, and other boating equipment at the Rock River Marina on the lake’s southern shores.
Lake Koshkonong’s northern shore is occupied by the vast Koshkonong Wildlife Area, which just happens to be a very scenic place to stretch your legs. Extending across 800 acres, this wildlife area consists of marshy wetlands and bottomland hardwoods, which are home to a diverse selection of wildlife. Spend the day exploring the scenic nature trails that wind their way through these diverse landscapes, looking out for any wildlife on the way!
Finding a place to set up your RV rental near Lake Koshkonong is easy, thanks to an abundance of RV parks scattered along the edge of the lake.
Family-oriented Yogi Bear Jellystone Park is one of the most well-equipped RV parks in the area. Situated on the lake’s eastern shores, it enjoys a prime location next to the water and provides campers with a private boat ramp for ease of access to Lake Koshkonong. As well as excellent washroom facilities and full-hookups at every site, travelers here can enjoy the on-site mini-golf, volleyball court, and swimming pool amenities.
The rest of the campgrounds are clustered around Lake Koshkonong’s southern region and include a modern KOA as well as several independently run campgrounds. Consider setting up camp at the Lakeland Camping Resort, a vast RV park open from April through to October. With over 700 sites to choose from here, you shouldn’t need to book in advance to find a place to park up your rental RV at Lakeland Camping Resort. Each site is fully serviced with water, electric, and sewer hookups as well being within walking distance to well-maintained washrooms and a coin-operated laundry facility.
A visit to the town of Fort Atkinson is a must-do for history buffs renting an RV at Lake Koshkonong. Fort Atkinson is home to a reconstruction of Fort Koshkonong, which was a significant stronghold during the Black Hawk War in 1832. The fort was controlled by General Henry Atkinson who led the battle against the Indian War chief, Black Hawk, in a bid to win ownership of the land in the Midwest.
To learn more about the Black Hawk War and other significant events in the Wisconsin area, take a visit to the Hoard Historical Museum. Home to a wide variety of exhibitions, visitors can wander through displays of Indian artifacts, watch multi-media documentaries about how life once was in Jefferson County and explore a life-scale diorama of a Late Woodland Camp. Once you have exhausted the museum’s exhibits, why not venture out to one of the nearby Mound sites that are open to the public daily. Although these mounds still remain a mystery, what we do know is that they were a significant part of the Native American culture
When you are heading north on your way out from Lake Koshkonong, don’t forget to make a quick stop off at the iconic Octagon House in Watertown. Built-in 1854 by John Richards, one of the town’s first settlers, the Octagon House was once one of the largest houses in Wisconsin. Today many choose to visit the house to marvel at its unique and progressive architecture as well as to explore the museum that sits inside. Self-guided tours are possible here, although joining a guided tour of the museum is much more beneficial.
