Getting Outdoors
Like many lakes in Wisconsin's Lake Superior Northwoods Tourism Region, Matthews Lake is great for a spot of fishing. There is plenty of fish such as northern pike, bluegill, muskie, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, and panfish in plentiful supply. In addition to the lake, just under a mile away, angles also have access to the Namekagen River for another type of fishing experience. This cold-water habitat means that a range of other species calls the water their home, such as brown trout, brook trout, and smallmouth bass.
Camping at Matthews Lake
Brad and Kay's Campground is just a little north of Matthew's Lake; therefore it is a convenient place to spend the night. There are 15 campsites that are available to rent at the weekend with showers, laundry room, and a dump station. The campground hosts a few events throughout the year, so take a look and see if there is anything on during your stay next time you go camping at Matthews Lake.
Exploring the Area
The history of the area has been lovingly preserved in the communities that surround the lake. For example, in the small town of Birchwood, the historical society has maintained the log museum, where visitors can learn more about the logging industry through a display of logging memorabilia. Another opportunity to view local history is in the 1901 Howard Morey Homestead. While in the area, be sure to check out the town of Minong, which can be a great place to spend a few hours and make use of the local shops and eateries when getting a Minong camper rental.

The adventure basecamp worked very well for our family reunion at a family cabin, giving extra sleeping and nap space. The camper was in great condition, great space inside, air conditioner and other amenities in good working order. Beau was great to work with, timely deliver and pickup, fair price for the size and condition of the camper. The only issue was the mothball smell remaining from winter storage which caused a problem for a pregnant family member. Reservations and payments were easy through Outdoorsy.
