On the western shores of the sapphire waters of Lake Michigan, about 75 miles north of Chicago and just 25 miles south of Milwaukee, the town of Racine, Wisconsin offers visitors a wide variety of both urban and natural experiences. Nearby destinations include the charming lakeside town of Lake Geneva, just 40 miles to the west, and the vibrant college town of Madison, about 100 miles to the west.
The Racine area was settled potentially as long ago as 10,000 BCE and it has been enjoyed ever since. Settlers appeared in the region in 1674 and began living in the region permanently. The city has served as a sanctuary for everyone, from those escaping the south via the Underground Railroad to the many immigrant populations that have come to call this place home, Racine is an idyllic destination to rent an RV.
Even though Racine enjoys with rather large and well-paved roads, driving your Racine RV rental by owner around may not be your idea of a fun time. Luckily enough, the Belle Urban System, known as Belle, has eight routes around the city for you to use to explore.
When you book an RV in Racine County, you’ll open up the beautiful world of Wisconsin. You’ll be able to enjoy the many parks, lakes, rivers, and activities that fill the boundaries of this scenic state.
On the glittering waters of Lake Michigan, Racine’s location makes it easy to enjoy the many recreational activities perfect for the lake. You can rent a kayak, a canoe, or even a motorized boat to enjoy even more of the lake. At just over 22,000 square miles, there’s a lot to explore. Or, you can relax on the Racine North Beach and soak up some sun or maybe even play some beach volleyball.
About an hour and a half to the north of town is the Kettle Moraine State Forest. Once covered by a giant, ancient glacier, the land of the Kettle Moraine State Forest is decorated with various geologic formations that are unlike anything else in the world. Some are dramatic outcrops and some, the moraines, are hollowed out pits. The favorite trail in the park is the Ice Age National Scenic Trail at 31 miles and showcases the most dramatic sections of the ancient glacier bed. If you don’t feel like hiking, you can take advantage of the various small lakes that have formed due to the moraines and do a little fishing or some boating.
If you want to explore some of northern Wisconsin and want a quick little overnight trip with your Racine rental RV, about five hours to the north is Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Covering about 1.5 millions acres, this magnificent stretch of land is divided into two parks, a western side and an eastern side. With towering pines and crystal clear rivers and streams, this perfectly preserved piece of Wisconsin is a wonderful place to go. With roughly 800 miles of trails laced throughout the impressive forest, you can choose from a variety of shorter trails or challenge yourself with an overnight backpacking hike. Or if it’s the midst of winter during your Racine motorhome rental vacation, you can try some cross-country skiing and feel like you’ve been transported to a one-of-a-kind winter wonderland as you ski through the picturesque pines.
After you ski to your heart’s content in northern Wisconsin or you’ve gotten a day full of sun on the shores of Lake Michigan, you’re going to need to find somewhere to park your rental camper near Racine and recharge.
Just to the north of town is the Cliffside Park Campgrounds. Situated right on the shores of beautiful Lake Michigan, you can unwind from the day with one of the best views in the Great Lakes region. Not only that, but you will have a full hook-up, access to a bathroom and shower block, and even a baseball field and soccer field.
Southwest of town is the Happy Acres Kampground, which is a nice campground for families. You will get full hookups, access to restroom and shower blocks, and you can enjoy time spent at the on-site beach, multiple playgrounds, miniature golf course, and petting zoo.
After you’ve explored as much of Wisconsin as you can handle, make room for a little more and turn your Racine rental motorhome back to town. There’s so much to do in this idyllic lakeshore town that you will have no difficulty filling the day.
You can spend part of your day at the Racine Zoo. With hundreds of exotic animals to see, you can get up close and personal with bears, rhinoceroses, and alligators, plus many more. They also have so many special events going on, you’re sure to run into a concert or even breakfast events with some of the animals.
If you want to learn a little about the history of Racine County and the shipping and fishing industry of Lake Michigan, spend part of the day at the breathtaking Wind Point Lighthouse. Built in 1880, it is the tallest and one of the oldest lighthouses on Lake Michigan. With a proud place on the National Register of Historic Places, you can delight in this stunning spectacle that showcases human ingenuity.
After a day full of exploring, you’re going to need to refuel. Racine has one of the largest Danish populations outside of Denmark. And so, when they moved to America, they brought their famed pastries with them. Be sure to treat yourself to a region-famed Kringle, a donut-shaped flaky pastry filled with a sweet filling and served with some vanilla icing.
