Silver Lake is tucked into Wisconsin’s southeastern corner, just down the road from the town of Lake Geneva. Located minutes from Highway 50, and easily accessible from Racine, you’ll want to book an RV in Kenosha County, WI when you’re interested in seeing some of the lesser-visited parts of Wisconsin.

Silver Lake is one of many lakes that were formed as a result of the Wisconsin Glacier, which covered a vast portion of North America more than 10,000 years ago. When the glacier began to retreat, it deposited large boulders and layers of sand, which carved the landscapes that we see today, including Silver Lake.

As well as refreshing glacial waters, Silver Lake is surrounded by dense woodlands and an increasing number of vacation rental properties. With miles of hiking trails and excellent boating and fishing opportunities, renting an RV here opens up a myriad of outdoor recreational activities.

Getting Outdoors

Spanning across 500 acres, there is plenty to keep you occupied when you rent a camper near Silver Lake. Boating is one of the most popular ways to spend time on Silver Lake. Although motorized vessels are permitted, the lake’s vast waters are best explored with a kayak or canoe. Those motorhome camping with their own equipment can head straight for one of the three public boat ramps, while those who need a rental will find an outlet in Kenosha Silver Lake County Park.

Silver Lake is stocked with fish regularly, making it the perfect place to spend time on the water. Whether an experienced or novice fisher, those camping at Silver Lake can try their hand at catching a muskie, largemouth bass, northern pike, and even catfish. Thanks to the lake’s relatively clear waters, fishing is possible from both a secluded spot along the shoreline or from the comfort of your own boat.

The 260-acre Kenosha Silver Lake County Park occupies Silver Lake’s northeastern shoreline and is perfect for a hiking or mountain biking adventure. The park is home to over ten miles of multi-use trails that range in difficulty from beginner to expert level. With a range of very safe, one-way mountain biking trails, this is the perfect place for any newbies to try out a different hobby. Even better, with the swimming beach not too far away, you can take a refreshing dip in Silver Lake once you’re finished.

There is also plenty to keep you busy when you go RV camping at Silver Lake during the winter months. During the colder months, the ten miles of trails in Kenosha Silver Lake County Park are blanketed in snow and come alive with snowshoers, cross-country skiers, and fat-tyre mountain bikers. For around two months a year, the whole of Silver Lake freezes over, making it a popular place for a spot of ice fishing. Just remember to double-check ice thickness and disperse your weight whilst you’re fishing!

Camping at Silver Lake

Exploring the Area

You will not have to venture too far from Silver Lake to find some of the county’s top attractions. The majority of these can be found in the lakeside town of Kenosha, which is twenty miles east of Silver Lake.

One of Kenosha’s most unique attractions and an all-round family favorite is the Jelly Bean Visitor Center. As well as housing a huge variety of jellybean flavors, the center’s main attraction is the Jelly Bean Express. This indoor train takes visitors on a journey through the candy factory with an added commentary on the history of the much-loved sweet and how it is made. At the end of the tour, each participant receives a free bag of jellybeans and a chance to taste some exclusive flavors at the sample bar!

History buffs on a Silver Lake camping trip should not miss the chance to visit Kenosha’s Civil War Museum. Opened in 2008, this modern museum is on a mission to educate the general public on America’s civil war, in particular, the contributions of the Upper Middle West. The permanent exhibitions on display here focus on the real-life stories of men and women who lived through the war and make for a heartfelt visit.

For your final stop in Kenosha, take an afternoon out to visit the Dinosaur Discovery Museum. As the only museum in North America to exclusively focus on the connection between birds and meat-eating dinosaurs, visiting this museum is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Take a wander through thousands of never-seen-before fossils and dinosaur skeletons and leave with a newfound appreciation for the Jurassic world.
