Getting Outdoors
Encompassing around 1,230 acres, tall deciduous trees crowd the shores, bisecting the horizon between the blue sky and water with a layer of soft, muted green. These trees act as a windbreak, and the lake water is generally very calm and clear. Indeed, fish can be observed swimming and darting about as far as 10 feet down. For outdoorsmen seeking quiet and solitude, White Sand Lake may be a good choice. Aside from the public boat landing and a couple of small wilderness resorts, the lake doesn’t get crowded even in the height of the summer season. One has to simply paddle away from these spots along the shore to achieve seclusion.
Camping at White Sand Lake
Wake up to the sound of nature: birdsong in the trees. Croaks of frogs along the lakeshore. The cry of an eagle somewhere above. Though it’s tempting to pull over into a discreet spot and park overnight, many roads in this region are narrow and difficult to find a safe spot. It’s wiser to use an established campground. Unfortunately, RV camping at White Sand Lake isn’t feasible because there are no public facilities on the shores. However, there are several options within 20 miles. Consider RV camping at Headwater Lakes State Natural Area’s campgrounds. Emily Lake Campground is not far from Lac Du Flambeau, WI, and may be a good candidate to consider. The small campground, with only 11 sites, is private and quiet. It is equipped with fire rings, vault toilets, and drinking water.
Exploring the Area
In this remote region of Wisconsin, it’s hard to believe that’s there’s plenty of sightseeing spots and attractions for visitors to explore. Finding them all is a snap with the help of a rental motorhome. The marshy wetland region is quite ideal for cranberry bogs, and there are several farms that are open to the public. Up in Manitowish Waters, Manitowish Cranberry Company is open to tours during which visitors learn about how cranberries are harvested and processed. The on-site farm store stocks cranberry products as well as other fresh produce from the other local farms and orchards.
