Getting Outdoors

With a big and beautiful lake right on your doorstep, it won't surprise you to learn that water sports are the most popular activities in Yellowstone Lake State Park. Of course, how you decide to enjoy this wonderful natural resource is entirely up to you.

Some Yellowstone Lake State Park campers love nothing more than taking a refreshing swim to escape the summer heat. The park boasts a designated swimming beach that's popular with both swimmers and sunbathers, but the fact that there are no lifeguards on duty means you'll enter the water at your own risk.

If you'd prefer to be on the water rather than in it, Yellowstone Lake offers an aquatic playground for a wide range of watercraft. Canoes, kayaks, sailing boats, and larger craft are all welcome on the lake, and the park has a canoe launching area and two boat launching ramps. If you don't have your own boat, you can rent one at the lake's eastern end during summer.

Fishing is also a popular pastime on Yellowstone Lake. Walleye, crappie, bass, bluegill, and a wide variety of other species can all be caught in the lake, and there's even free fishing equipment available to use at the park office. However, make sure you comply with all size regulations and other restrictions when fishing, as some species are designated as catch-and-release only.

If you ever get tired of the many water sports on offer, you might want to set out on foot to navigate some or all of Yellowstone Lake State Park's 13-mile hiking network. There are trails to suit a variety of fitness levels, so check out trail descriptions and routes before starting your hike.

If you're after something reasonably easy, the one-mile Wildlife Loop Trail will be a good fit. For those who want something a little more challenging, the two-mile Oak Grove Trail will help you raise your heart rate on some of its steep climbs.

Camping at Yellowstone Lake State Park

Open from April to November, the Yellowstone Lake State Park Campground features 128 sites. All except 20 sites can be reserved in advance, while 38 sites feature electrical hookups. Two campsites are also designed to be accessible for people with disabilities. Five group tent camping sites are also available.

During peak season, campers can enjoy the comfort and convenience of flush toilets, hot showers, and an RV dump station. However, when these amenities aren't available, vault toilets and drinking water are also provided.
