You don't have to be a genius to work out that most of the activity in Merrick State Park revolves around the river. So if you're into water sports, you'll find plenty to keep you happy during your stay. Keen anglers in particular will feel right at home, with a wide variety of species to be targeted here. From largemouth and smallmouth bass to crappie, bluegill, and a variety of other species, you never know what you might pull into the boat. Fishing equipment can be borrowed from the park office, but you'll need to make sure that you have a fishing license before wetting a line. If you're not into fishing, you might prefer exploring the river at your own pace. There are two boat launching areas and a canoe launching area in the park, ensuring easy access to the water for everyone from kayakers to larger motorized boats. The backwaters in particular offer a relaxing and peaceful environment for paddlers to explore. Canoes are available for rent from Memorial Day weekend until Labor Day weekend. There's also a self-guided canoe trail that starts near the lower boat launch area. While water sports are the main attraction, Merrick State Park also offers opportunities for exploration on land. For example, you might want to check out the two miles of hiking trails to be found in the park — the trail near the South Campground that leads to two scenic viewpoints is a particular favorite. Or if you visit in winter, you might want to bring your skis to go cross-country skiing along the trails or in the undeveloped areas of the park.
