Sourland Mountain Preserve is a modest 4,000-acre park, one of the largest in northern New Jersey. The mature, tall trees and dense shrubbery muffle the sounds of city life, reducing it to a distant whisper. Several miles of trails winding through the woods offers plenty of hiking, biking, and horseback-riding fun. Rock-climbers are often spotted scaling gigantic boulders, which were deposited by the massive glacier as it receded north about 20,000 years ago. An Edison camper rental makes it convenient to head out of town to hit a larger wilderness park. The Wharton State Forest, some 50 miles south, is an excellent choice. The largest wilderness park in New Jersey, it encompasses over 122,000 acres of land, and has varied biomes for hikers and outdoors lovers to explore. Hike, bike, fish, climb, and more. There are hundreds of miles of trails, the longest of which is the Batona Trail. Around 50 miles, it connects Wharton to the nearby Bass River and Brendan T. Byrne state forests. Apple Pie Hill, which is adjacent to the Batona Trail, is a popular stopping point. At top of the hill is a 60-foot fire tower, which is open to the public. It offers a panoramic, sweeping view of the Pinelands region.
