If you like watersports, you are going to love this part of Florida. Most people think of the ocean beaches or gulf waters of Florida, but did you know that there’s an “inland sea” right in the heart of the state? The wondrous body of water of Lake Okeechobee is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the United States, and contained by the Herbert Hoover Dike, built in 1928. Waterways on either side connect the lake to other parts of the state, creating a 152-mile boating passageway right in the middle of the state. You can hike, access the scenic trail where you can spend a night camping on the Kissimmee River, or catch a pontoon or airboat ride from the marina. Animal lovers enjoy a local favorite spot at Arnold’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Near the famed Kissimmee Prairie, another worthwhile stop with the Okeechobee RV rental, the rehabilitation center takes care of native Florida wildlife and features nature trails, birding paths, and opportunities to take in the feel and spirit of this part of Florida. State parks in the area are abundant, and a wonderful spot to spend a day is at the Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park. This 54,000-acre park protects the largest remaining section of Florida dry prairie, and is the home to many endangered animals and plants. Enjoy sweeping vistas of the grasslands that will remind many visitors of the great plains of the Midwest. There are wonderful birding opportunities here, as well as horseback riding, hiking, and bicycling trails. Ranger-led tours from November through March allow tourists to visit the more remote areas of the preserve. Low light pollution also makes this a great place to see gorgeous night skies, and there are full-facility campgrounds on the grounds, too, perfect for your Okeechobee rental motorhome. Not too far from Okeechobee, and a short drive in your Okeechobee rental RV, is the Taylor Creek/Nubbins Slough Conservation area. This is a great place for a day visit, with picnic areas, clean and well-maintained paths for hiking or bike riding, and lots of wildlife in beautifully maintained and preserved wetlands. Birding is also very popular here, with great trails and walkways.
