Lake Okeechobee is found in the southern part of Florida, near the eastern coast of the peninsula. As it is one of the state's largest lakes (not to mention one of the largest in the country), it is sometimes called Florida's Inland Sea. The nearest larger city is West Palm Beach, found around 50 miles to the east, and it sits on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. The busy city of Miami is nearly 100 miles to the south.

Exploring the Area

Fort Drum Crystal Mine was a working mine that closed several years ago. Guided tours are now available that highlight the history of the site and the various gems and fossils that have been unearthed there. This area is accustomed to meeting the needs of visitors. So there are gas stations and grocery stores found around its shores. These make it easy to refill any supplies you find yourself running low on. There are also plenty of restaurants, many specializing in the seafood that is common to the local area.
