Auburn campers will be close to the Chain O' Lakes region of Indiana, and anybody looking for peaceful natural areas to explore will want to visit Chain O' Lakes State Park. This park covers over 2,600 acres of dense forests and nine interconnected kettle lakes. These interconnected lakes are a paddler's dream, and visitors can rent canoes and kayaks from the park office, and then drift their way along these serene waterways. There is also a boat launch and swimming beach. This park is superb for hiking, with 23 miles of trails leading through the forest and along the lakes. Another tranquil state park located close to Auburn is Independence Dam State Park. This park can be found just across the Ohio state line and consists of over 500 acres of woodlands along the scenic Maumee River. Watersports such as boating are very popular here, and there are several boat launches around the park. Kayaking and canoeing are also popular, and if you're feeling adventurous, four miles of the river are suitable for waterskiing. Fishing is another favorite activity, and common catches include catfish, bass, and crappie. Learn a bit of local history by hiking the three-mile trail that used to be part of the Erie and Miami Canal towpath. It's a great way to learn more about the region's historic canal systems. If you want to see more of the beautiful Maumee River, plan a trip to Mary Jane Thurston State Park. This small park covers roughly 100 acres along the river; this section of the river is known as one of the best fishing spots in Ohio. The park features a huge marina, which is ideal for docking your boat, and anglers can expect to catch an array of fish, such as walleye, bullhead, bass, and more. There are also several short trails ranging from under a mile to over three miles in length that follow the old canal routes.
