Although the land was surveyed and platted in 1724, the first known settlers didn’t arrive till the 1730s. One of the land buyers was Susanna Beatty, who was a widower. This was unique because, in those days, women did not own properties, generally. A church, the Glade Reformed Congregation, was built in the mid-1700s and is still going today. The original church, which was a log structure, is also still in use for the Congregation’s functions. The town of Walkersville formed when Isaac Walker purchased land from his father in 1831 and created the plans for the development of a town. Adjacent to a major route between Frederick and Gettysburg, PA, the town quickly grew thanks to a steady flow of travelers.
