It is packed with natural features like hardwood forests, freshwater lakes, and a stretch of the Saugus River. A highlight of the area is the stunning views of Boston and New England from the rocky hilltops of Breakheart Reservation. With archaeological evidence dating back to the Archaic and Woodland periods, the reservation has gone through major changes over the centuries.

In terms of outdoor recreation, the reservation offers several options. With extensive hiking trails, two lakes for boating, swimming, and fishing, nature programs, and ranger-led walks, there is never a dull moment when camping at Breakheart Reservation. And if you’ve ever wondered about where the name ‘Breakheart’ came from, it’s believed that during the Civil War era soldiers were stationed for training at this isolated location, and the loneliness broke their hearts, leading to its name.

Breakheart Reservation is a great location for outdoor adventure. Explore the extensive trail system in the reservation and soak in the stunning views of central Massachusetts. With over two-dozen trails to check out, don’t forget your hiking boots. Easier hiking trails to try out are Eagle rock Trail and Fox Run Trail. Hike the vistas for those stunning views. Fancy a dip in one of the lakes? Feel free to dive into Silver or Pearce Lake for a swim. There are roped boundaries at both the lake and its advisable to stay within those boundaries.

Camping at Breakheart Reservation 

While there is no camping inside the reservation, there are several campgrounds around Breakheart Reservation. Winter Island Park Campground in nearby Salem has 57 campsites. The park offers amenities like big rig access, tent camping, 20, 30, and 50 amp electric service, water, central water spigot, WiFi, and cell phone coverage. There are restrooms and shower stalls and picnic shelters too. Bring the kids along to run around in the playground or explore the recreational trails. Make use of the beach too. Pets are welcome at this pet-friendly campground. 

If you’re looking for a place to camp in an RV near Breakheart Reservation, drive to Gloucester to Cape Ann Campsite. There are 230 sites available, and amenities at the campground include big rig access, tent camping, full hookups, 20, 30, and 50 amp electric service, water, sewer, dump station, and limited cell phone coverage. Campers have access to restrooms, shower stalls, and a camp store for last-minute camping essentials. Bring your furry friends along to this pet-friendly campground.
