Many of the lakes also have boat ramps open all year round; this makes accessing the water simple. Those motorhome camping without a boat of their own can rent a range of boats from the park itself.

As well as the abundance of lakeside recreation, Waterloo Recreation Area is also a haven for hikers, horseback riders, and watchers of wildlife. The park has an endless network of trails that crisscross the park, offering differing views of the surrounding landscapes. The trails differ in both length and difficulty, meaning that hikers of all experience levels of hikers can find a route that is right for them. The 36-mile Waterloo-Pickney trail also passes through the park, connecting it to Pickney Recreation Area.

The park is home to over 400 campsites, contained in two campgrounds, one equestrian, and one rustic campground. Holiday RV Campground is an ideal place to set up camp. Full 20, 30, 50 amp electric, water, and sewage hookups are provided here. Facilities include a dump station, flushing toilets, shower block, on-site general store, and a swimming pool.

Another campsite is the Oaks Campgrounds RV Park. Full hookups are also provided here, alongside flushing toilets, shower blocks, a dog run, and laundry service. There are also many pull-thru sites here, meaning all sizes of rigs are welcome.

The nearby city of Chelsea is only a few miles from Waterloo Recreation Area and provides campers with a handful of sightseeing opportunities. Boasting several well-curated exhibitions, the Chelsea Historical Museum will engage visitors in subjects such as Native American history, the first European settlers, and much more.

The city of Ann Arbor is only half an hour’s drive east from Waterloo Recreation Area, and this city too is perfect for day trips and sightseeing. Those with a love of all things art and culture should not pass up the chance to visit the University of Michigan Museum of Art. This art museum is home to a vast collection of art that spans many eras and styles. The museum’s highlights are pieces by Pablo Picasso, Franz Kline, and Claude Monet. The building itself is a sight to behold and was designed in the neoclassical style.

Families camping with children may wish to visit the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum. This museum is designed in a way that allows children to interact with the exhibits and displays, getting far more out of the experience compared to a conventional museum. Each interactive display tries to highlight a specific subject, from the human body to historical displays highlighting the 1930s.
