Discover Jackson

Jackson, Michigan, sits between Lansing and Ann Arbor along I-94 in south-central Michigan. Situated in the state’s central hilly moraines, Jackson is surrounded by densely forested hills and stunning glacial lakes, making it a hub for outdoor adventurers looking to experience the beauty of central Michigan. When you rent an RV in Jackson, you can easily find a home base among these scenic lakes, or you can check out a nearby RV resort for full amenities. After exploring the hills of south central Michigan, you can then head to Jackson’s historic downtown to tour museums or grab a bite to eat. With your Jackson rental RV, you’ll easily be able to enjoy all that Jackson, MI, has to offer!

The Great Outdoors

Jackson is best known for its close proximity to Michigan’s massive Waterloo State Recreation Area. With over 20,000 acres of space and over 40 miles of multi-use trails, this park is the largest park in Michigan’s lower peninsula, and it’s the perfect destination for anyone looking to explore the natural beauty of south central Michigan. Visitors to the park can swim at one of two beaches, rent a rowboat or kayak, fish, hunt in season, and mountain bike down some of the best trails in Michigan. Off-season visitors shouldn’t despair, either - the park offers cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing during the winter. On the northeastern edge of the park, you can check out the Pinckney Recreation Area, another massive park with over 10,000 acres of multi-use space. Like Waterloo, this recreation area offers a variety of activities, including swimming, hiking, and kayaking.

Visitors to Jackson can also head southeast of the city to Hayes State Park. Situated in the heart of the Irish Hills on the shores of Wamplers Lake, this park has plenty of water recreational opportunities, from on-site boat rentals to swimming beaches in addition to your standard array of hiking trails.

You can also check out the Meridian-Baseline Historic State Park in Leslie, which contains two monuments to Michigan’s land surveyors. If you’d like to stay a bit closer to town, check out the Kate Palmer Sanctuary or Ella Sharp Park. The Kate Palmer Sanctuary is just outside of the city, and although it’s scenic all year round, you should try to time your visit when the wildflowers bloom. Ella Sharp Park, on the other hand, sits in the center of the city, offering walking trails and plenty of traditional and disc golf courses. When you book a rental RV in Jackson, you’ll easily be able to explore all of the gorgeous areas of central Michigan.

RV Parks

Although there are no RV parks within city limits, you can find plenty of RV campgrounds just outside the city. Hideaway RV Park is just east of the city on I-94, offering full hookups and on-site paddle-boating and fishing in a serene, peaceful environment. The Oaks Campground is a bit farther out of the way, but it has a more resort-like feel with mini-golf, a dog park, and even ice fishing available on site. The Heartland Woods Family Resort is another option, with two pools, wagon rides, and regularly scheduled live entertainment for guests.

RVers looking to get closer to nature with a rental motorhome near Jackson, MI, should check out the camping available at Waterloo State Recreation Area at Portage and Sugarloaf lakes. These campgrounds offer basics like electrical hookups and on-site concessions; however, they do not offer water or sewer hookups, and you must often reserve in advance since space is limited in peak seasons. The nearby Pinckney Recreation Area has camping with electrical hookups along Bruin and Crooked Lake, and visitors can even camp here during winter months. If you’re looking for a more modern campground with full hookups, check out the campgrounds at Hayes State Park - but be warned, fully-loaded campsites fill fast, so be sure to book far in advance if you plan to camp at Hayes. Between these scenic state parks and local RV camping, you’ll surely find a great home base when you book an RV in Jackson.

Exploring the City

Although Jackson is a convenient gateway to the rolling hills and lakes of south-central Michigan, the town itself has plenty to offer visitors. History buffs will revel in Jackson’s plentiful museums, prison history, and status as the birthplace of the Republican Party. Jackson’s museums range from standard historical preservations from the Civil War to niche museums for cars and organs, so everyone in your RV group will find a museum that interests them. Visitors can also head to historic Downtown Jackson to take a walking tour of 1920’s architecture or grab a bite to eat in one of the city’s many restaurants. Since Jackson is relatively small, driving your Jackson rental camper through the city shouldn’t be too difficult, but be mindful of parking in crowded museum lots or in downtown.
