Let's start with a few questions to narrow down your options.
Once inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans for thousands of years, the tribes left the area when European settlers migrated into the area. They were attracted to the region that would become Chatham because crossing the Passaic River at this juncture was easier, and it was also close to a pass in the mountains. The nearby Native American trail was co-opted by the local farmers and miners for the transport of their goods. Initially named John Day’s Bridge, the community changed the town’s name to Chatham in 1773 in a nod to a British Parliament member, the first Earl of Chatham (the British counterpart), who was an advocate of establishing rights for the American colonists.
