Home to the training grounds of the New York Jets, Florham Park, New Jersey is a residential borough in Morris County on the western outskirts of Newark. Europeans first settled it at the end of the 17th century and named after one of America’s finest Gilded Age homes, “Florham,” which was built in the 1890s.

Centered around a lively commercial hub and with natural wonders on its doorstep, Florham Park is a worthy destination to rent an RV. It’s within easy access of the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and the sprawling Morris Museum, not to mention the bright lights and buzzing streets of Manhattan.

Discover Florham Park

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV rental in Florham Park and make the short drive west to the Friends of the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris. It surrounds the Colonial Revival mansion of the Frelinghuysens, with an impressive collection of ornamental plants, mature shade trees, and flowers on display. Follow one of the nature trails that lead through the property or let the kids loose in the Kathryn A. Porter "Branching Out!" Garden, with outdoor concerts regularly held on the lawn during the summer months.

A short drive south of Florham Park is the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, which is a must-visit destination for keen birdwatchers. More than 200 migratory and resident species have been recorded in and around the sprawling swamp, with many coming here to rest during their journey. Keep your eyes peeled for northern harriers, American bitterns, and red-headed woodpeckers, as well as red-shouldered hawks and barred owls.

Head east from Florham Park and you’ll arrive at the South Mountain Reservation inOrange, which was developed from wilderness at the end of the 19th century by the Olmsted Brothers. Follow one of the hiking trails that lead through the dense woodlands to waterfalls and streams or soak up the views towards New York and Jersey City from the Crater View. If you’re traveling with kids, the South Mountain Reservation is also home to a mini-golf course and an adventure ropes course, as well as the Turtle Back Zoo and a paddleboat concession.

RV Parks

If you’ve booked a travel trailer rental in Florham Park, you can pull into one of the RV sites at the Liberty Harbor RV Park. It’s marketed as the closest RV park to New York City, with the city skyline visible from the campground. Select from one of their 50 RV sites, then take advantage of the on-site laundry facilities and Wi-Fi.

Military ID holders are also eligible to stay at the Navy Earle MWR RV Park, which is home to just 15 sites on an active military base. Choose between their 20, 30 and 50-amp service sites to suit your RV, with picnic facilities and barbecue grills where you can meet and dine with other guests.

Or, you can make the 10-minute drive to Cedar Knolls and its Walmart store where you may be able to set up camp for a night or two with the manager’s permission.

Exploring the City
