Gloucester City is a town in Camden County, New Jersey, that was incorporated in 1868 from portions of Union Township. It is across the Delaware River from Philadelphia, and it began around 1620 as a fort used for trade, primarily in beaver pelts. However, most of the trading occurred across the river, prompting the fort's founder to relocate the fort to the opposing side of the river. The city has been host to many celebrities in the past. The Philadelphia Athletics called a local baseball stadium home from 1888 to 1890; world champion boxer John L. Sullivan had an exhibition match in Gloucester City with wrestling champion William Muldoon; and Annie Oakley put on an exhibition here twice, once in 1888 with the Pawnee Bill Frontier Exhibition and again in 1898.
