While it’s geographically within New Jersey, Riverton is a pleasant Philadelphia suburb by the Delaware River, a half hour's drive from Camden. In 1851, ten families from Philadelphia established their river-front summer homes here. Riverton is considered one of the earliest fully planned communities in the country. Its tree-lined avenues, leafy town center, and charming homes are all testament to the founders’ vision.

Riverton is well-located to get you close to the natural wonders of south New Jersey while also just across the river from one of the most historic cities in the United States. Book an RV in Riverton, and you’ll just be an hour's drive away from the lakes, wetlands, and nature trails of Wharton State Forest, or take advantage of the strong transport links connecting the cities and towns on either side of the river to experience the Pennsylvania side of your adventure. Philadelphia is the best place to start it all off with so much more to look forward to.

Nature Trails and Birding Spots in South New Jersey

With the Delaware River just a few feet from Riverton's front door, you wouldn't have to go far for water-based adventures. If you want to add birdwatching, hiking, and cycling to canoeing and fishing, the Amico Island Park is only 10 minutes' drive by motorhome rental from Riverton. The 55-acre peninsula is home to upland forests, wetlands, and freshwater ponds. Within the park, more than 150 species of birds, including great blue herons (which nest in a small island by the Dredge Harbor between March to June), can be spotted.

For more of the same views and outdoor opportunities but in a much larger setting, take your RV trailer rental from Riverton to Rancocas State Park, 30 minutes' drive away, and you'll have more than 500 acres of varied habitats ranging from upland and lowland forests to tidal creeks and marshes to explore. Give yourself a good workout in the park's eight miles of equestrian, mountain biking, and hiking trails. Be vigilant, and you just might spot bald eagles, red-tailed hawks, and great blue herons along with a wide variety of songbirds and waterfowl.

Add a dose of history to your outdoor expeditions at the Wharton State Forest. More than 250 years ago, a bog iron and glass-making industry arose in Batsto Village whose primary business was supplying munitions, camp kettles, and iron fittings to the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Go on a cellphone-guided tour of the historic village, dip a paddle in Mullica River, or see how much area you can cover along Batona Trail's 50 miles via mountain bike, horseback, or foot. Tick off bird species off your list when you spot great-horned owls, marsh hawks, and purple martins.

Where to Park Your RV

While about 25 miles away, the Philadelphia South/Clarksboro KOA in Clarksboro is the closest campground for your RV rental from Riverton. It has full hookup sites, restrooms and showers, with access to a swimming pool and a catch-and-release fishing pond. If you want to be close to Batsto and the Batona Trail, head to the Atsion Recreation Area inside the Wharton State Forest. There are no hookups here, but you’ll have easier access to lakes, ponds, and fields where wildlife abounds.

A mobile home park in Hatfield (across the river and about 30 miles away) offers nightly rates for the Riverton campervan rental. Make a gas stop at one of the few gas stations in town as it’s quite a drive, but you’ll have access to water, electricity, and sewer hookups. However, if all you need is a space to sleep for a night or two and you don’t require any hookups, consider the Walmart parking lot at Cinnaminson. If you wish to stay closer to Philadelphia, you’ll have several Walmart parking lots to choose from. Clear your plans with the store manager to ensure you have a pleasant stay.

A (River)front Row Seat to Philly’s Attractions

Stroll along Riverton's Bank Avenue to appreciate the vision of the town’s founders. See the original settlers' Greek Revival summer cottages by the riverside promenade, and explore the historic district for its abundance of Victorian architecture. Rows of houses in the Queen Anne style dominate the Lippincott and Thomas Avenues while the Stick style is best exemplified by the Riverton Yacht Club building located at the end of the town's pier.

Riverton’s dining scene is limited to Mexican, comfort food and quick bites. What you won’t find here you can find in nearby Cinnaminson where the culinary offerings range from classic American to Italian and Japanese. There are plenty of fast food chains there too, including some Middle Eastern fare. Grocery and convenience stores in town are also limited, but nearby Palmyra and Cinnaminson have several places to buy fresh produce if you wish to cook your favorite meals in your travel trailer rental near Riverton.

Or venture across the river for a smorgasbord of dining choices. Connect to the City of Brotherly Love via River Line light rail, Burlington County's BurLink buses, or NJ Transit's buses. Hunt for the best Philly cheesesteaks, go on a brew tour, or watch the 76ers play at their home stadium at the Wells Fargo Center. Join a guided tour of the Independence Hall and see where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. Stand before the Liberty Bell and read the inscription that impassioned freedom-fighters worldwide. Or take your pick of museums: whether you’re into the arts, history, or the natural world, you’ll find something to fully engage your attention.

Let Riverton’s special location inspire your travels ahead. Search for an RV rental in Riverton, NJ and see which side of the river you most like. Venture beyond familiar boundaries to experience The Garden State in all its glory.
