Southeast Oklahoma is a land of gently rolling hills, occasionally dense forests, and pleasant summertime weather. When you book an RV in Atoka County, you’ll be in southeast Oklahoma and can enjoy all the area has to offer, including McGee Creek State Park. A rental motorhome at McGee Creek State Park will place you on the southwest edge of the Ouachita Mountain Range, in a prime location to explore not only the 2,600 acres of McGee Creek State Park but also the surrounding forests and lakes.

There is so much diverse wildlife that is present in the park, and the nearby McGee Creek Natural Scenic Recreation Area further bolsters the chances for outdoor activity while motorhome camping in the area. Together the two areas total over 20,000 acres, which includes the 3,800-acre reservoir that is nestled near the state park. Everything from fishing to hunting, scenic walks, hiking, boating, and more can be found in McGee Creek State Park.

Discover Mcgee Creek State Park

Getting Outdoors

One of the major attractions at McGee Creek State Park is the McGee Creek Reservoir, which is considered by anglers in Oklahoma to be one of the state’s finest trophy lakes. The reservoir has a surface area covering more than 3,300 acres and is home to an abundance of large and smallmouth bass, perch, sunfish, crappie, and channel catfish. The lake requires a fishing license to fish in, however, so be sure to update your licenses before casting a line.

Hunting is also popular at McGee Creek State Park, and there are over 10,000 acres of hunting land that is managed in the nearby McGee Creek Wildlife Management Area. The most prominent species that are hunted here include crow, dove, quail, rabbit, squirrel, turkey, waterfowl, and deer. Other species can be found in the wildlife management area, too, so be sure to bring your gear while camping with an RV if hunting is part of your itinerary.

Boating and swimming are other ways to pass the time when you rent a camper near McGee Creek State Park. There are many spots that are designated for swimmers with small beaches and gently sloping shores. Boating is permitted all throughout the reservoir, and boaters can participate in water skiing, tubing, and other exciting water-based sports. Various boat ramps can be found near the state park RV campgrounds, with others existing on the other end of the lake for convenience.

Camping at McGee Creek State Park

The Potapo Area, which is the home of state park RV camping at McGee Creek, is open all year long and accepts reservations ahead of time. There are over 40 RV compatible campsites to choose from at this campground, the majority of which are pull-thru sites with electricity hookups in 30 and 50 amps. Most of the sites also have water hookups, and those that don’t can get water from centrally-located fresh water pumps.

Pets are allowed in the campground so long as they are kept restrained at all times, and there are even equestrian specific trails for those who want to adventure with their horse. All campsites have grills, fire pits, picnic tables, and access to restrooms and showers. There is a dumping station that all campsites share and onsite park rangers in the event that you have any questions or problems during your stay.

Exploring the Area

Learning about the area you’ll be staying in is an exciting way to connect yourself to local history and events, and one of the best places to do this is at the nearby Atoka Museum and Civil War Cemetery, in Atoka. This museum is a unique stop and isn’t a far drive from the state park, and it covers the history of the Civil War and the impact that it had on Oklahoma and Atoka County, specifically. There are also dinosaur skeletons and other natural historically exciting exhibits to explore at this museum.

Antlers, OK, which is to the southeast of McGee Creek State Park, is a good place to find restaurants and gas stations to fuel your trip. In Antlers, you’ll find pizza places, locally owned and operated coffee shops and cafes, many Mexican restaurants, a few burger joints, and even a BBQ place. There is also the standard selection of fast food establishments and chain restaurants for when you prefer something more familiar. Most of the restaurants in Antlers can be found along Main Street, making them easy to find while exploring the town.

The town of Paris, TX, which is a bit further than the other two mentioned above, has a far greater selection of restaurants and museums than many other towns in the area. Paris is in Texas and is home to its own Eiffel Tower recreation, a popular tourist destination while visiting the town. When you camp in an RV near Paris, be sure to check out the Lamar County Historical Museum, a fantastic way to learn about local history. Paris is easy to navigate on foot when you have the time, so parking your RV and wandering the streets of this quintessential southern town is a great way to get a feel for the pace of life here.
