Settled in the 17th century, one of the first homes in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was built in 1696 in Broomall, PA, by Thomas Massey. Massey was an indentured servant in England who was sent to America to work off his servitude. Once he completed it, he received 50 acres of land from his former master and an additional 50 acres from William Penn. As the years passed, a small village slowly sprang forth. When they established a post office, they had to choose a name for their settlement. At the time, John Martin Broomall was a successful congressman for the 7th congressional district during the 1860s, and the town residents wanted to honor him. Thus the town of Broomall was born.
