Though the Kimberton region had been farmed as early as 1710s, there wasn’t a true town till a Quaker entrepreneur, Emmor Kimber, entered the scene in 1817. He purchased three properties and proceeded to open French Creek Boarding School for Girls. This school was unique in that it was open to all children from different faiths, and instead of utilizing corporal rule, the teachers espoused the Golden Rule to govern behavior. Children, provided that they followed the rules and attended the mandatory classes, were free to explore their curiosities and interests. Although this school is now closed, private education with similar philosophies continues at the nearby Kimberton Farm School.

The Great Outdoors

The largest, French Creek State Park, is surrounded by a handful of parks that are nearly as large. All combined, there is nearly 70,000 acres of wilderness to explore. Hike, bike, horseback ride, fish, and hunt. Wildlife is abundant, and avid bird watchers and photographers will find plenty of subjects to observe. One of the neighboring state gameland parks offers a small gun range. You must have a hunting license or range license to use this facility. There are a couple small lakes in the park, and the state park rangers operates a boat rental service. Fishermen, sailors, and adventurers have a choice of sunfish, canoe, kayak, or small motorized rowboat. Not only are there plentiful parking, this park allows RV camping, so cruise on down with your Kimberton travel trailer rental.

When you book an RV in Kimberton, remember to find a place to park overnight. There are several campgrounds in the area. Brandywine Creek Campground in Glenmoore, which is minutes away from Marsh Creek State Park, may be a good candidate. In addition to the usual amenities, the east branch of the creek curves around the park’s perimeter. Several RV lots have waterfront access, which is convenient for catching a few fish for breakfast or supper.

Exploring the City

While visiting a small town like Kimberton, you have to think out of the box when it comes to finding entertainment. The Historical Society of the Phoenixville Area is a small museum that exhibits local historical artifacts, maps, and odds and ends, and some of the local genealogy records, as well. Open Wednesdays and Fridays year-round, the volunteers are on hand to answer questions and help with research.
