The name, Tobyhanna, comes from a Native American word that means "dark waters whose banks are lined with alder trees." Though there were settlers as early as late 1700s, mostly trappers and a few farmers, a real village wasn't established until late 1800 when the Tobyhanna and Lehigh Lumber Company was founded. The company opened a handful of mills in the area, and the influx of jobs drew people to the town. When the area industry dwindled, a former bank cashier somehow ponied up the money to purchase a majority of the village in early 1900s, consisting of 30 homes and around 120 acres of land
Due to the high mountains sheltering the water, Tobyhanna Lakes often were covered in ice for several months out of the year. A new enterprise formed: ice that was used to keep fresh produce cool and in residential homes' kitchens. In those days, there were no electric freezers, and the wealthier homes had what was called "ice boxes," which were used to prolong perishable food life.
Today, Tobyhanna is a thriving vacation spot in part due to the neighboring resort towns, thus making it a great place to visit with your rental RV.
The closest large town is Scranton, 25 miles to the north. Dickson City lies around 40 miles to the north as well, while Wilkes-Barre is about an hour northwest.
Book an RV in Tobyhanna and gain access to dozens of large parks in the Poconos area. Tobyhanna State Park is the closest. Although not quite as large as the other state parks, preserves, and forests in the area, there are plenty of adventures to be had. Tobyhanna Lake is calm and serene, with mature trees lining the banks. A boat launch is available to the public, and if boat-less visitors wish to hit the water, state park managers have a number of small crafts available to rent, including canoes and kayaks. Native bass, pickerel, yellow perch, catfish, and a few others are frequently caught. The lake is stocked with brown and brook trouts in springtime, also. Several miles of trails wind around the lake. Hikers, take note: a couple trails are considered "technical" or challenging because they require leaping from boulder to boulder, and detours are difficult. Small children and pets should avoid these trails. Bring your Tobyhanna camper rental as there is plenty of parking that can accommodate long trailers and motorhomes.
For even more room and wilderness, the adjacent state game land encompasses over 25,000 acres. There are several miles of established trails, and experienced hikers can go off-trail, though it's highly recommended that they be experienced with orienteering. The terrain, which has patches of wetlands, is mostly flat with random groves of trees. During the hunting seasons, hikers, bikers, and any other park users should wear blaze orange as a preventative measure. Camping is permitted as long as you are within 200 feet of a designated trail and more than 500 feet away from a water source. There are several parking areas that can accommodate RVs and camper trailers, and for most part, it is okay to park overnight. Check with the park manager if you are uncertain.
When making arrangements for an RV rental, be sure to plan for overnight stays. Where will you park? Fortunately, in this part of Pennsylvania, there are several options for the RV community to make use of. Dozens of private campgrounds pepper the Pocono region, some bare bone while others are full-service RV resorts. Mount Pocono Campground, for example, has full hookups for your RV, 20, 30, and 50 amps, and numerous modern amenities. WiFi, heated pools, dog run, the works.
On the flip side, several campgrounds in Tobyhanna State Park allows RVs and trailers, but very few have electric hookups, and not all sites have a dump station. If hookups are a requirement, make your reservations well in advance -- sites go quickly during the summer months.
Though Tobyhanna is a quiet town, there's plenty of fun to be had, and hooking up with a luxury motorhome in Tobyhanna, makes it even easier to get around the Poconos to explore the neighboring towns. Hit the wild blue frontier. Helicopter tours are a high-flying way of getting an unique birds-eye view of the Poconos. See Mount Airy, Camelback, and shining blue lakes from the air. If you're lucky, you might even spot herds of elks roaming the open meadows. Hi-Tech Helicopters is conveniently close by in Mount Pocono.
Dozens of boutique shops and antique stores pepper the towns in the area. The antique stores offer a wide array of period-appropriate pieces ranging from late 1800s to the 70s. If you've been hunting for a particular style of chair or decorative vase, the odds are good. Some antique stores also carry locally made woodcraft like Appalachian chairs and one-of-a-kind dining room table or cabinet.
Step into the past at the Casino Theater and Malt Shop. The theater, which was originally a dance hall in the 1920s, is designed to look like a 1950s art-deco theater, with all of the modern amenities and luxuries. They show the current blockbuster movies, and even have 3D shows on occasion. Before you go in for a show, stop at the malt shop and choose from a wide array of vintage treats. Phosphates, soda ice cream, sundaes, egg creams, and malts. Place your order, and if you also have a ticket to an upcoming movie showing, the malt shop employees will bring it to your seat. You won't have to miss a minute of a movie to wait for them to prep your treat.
