The Great Outdoors
South Dakota is often associated with endless expanses of grasslands, but that all changes in the Black Hills near Hermosa. Badlands National Park and its accompanying wilderness are some of the most popular recreation areas in South Dakota and are just a short drive away when you book an RV in Hermosa. Hidden amidst the state’s sprawling prairie lands lies an enormous network of canyons winding their way through otherworldly rock formations. While badlands can be found throughout Montana and the Dakotas, the park is one of the best examples of it and also has some of the most abundant fossil deposits in the country. Also, if you’ve never seen a bison in the wild, sighting one on a hike through the park is a magical experience.
RV Parks
While there may not be very many people living in Hermosa, it has a good number of RV parks and campgrounds thanks to its location near the Black Hills and all of its tourist attractions. One of the closest places to camp with the motorhome rental from Hermosa is Heartland RV Park and Cabins, just a short drive south on Highway 79. Their sites have full hookups, access to a swimming pool and hot tub, and there’s a camp store where you can pick up all the essentials.
Exploring the City
Hermosa is a very small town and doesn't offer much in the way of in-town attractions. There are a lot of interesting to explore that are quite close by. An exception to this is the Roy’s Black Hills Twin Drive-In, which is right in the middle of Hermosa. The double-screen outdoor theater harkens back to an earlier time and is sure to bring joy to anyone who remembers watching films from the comfort of their car as a teenager.

We had an amazing time with this van! We stayed wherever we wanted, and stopped whenever we wanted. We had everything we needed in the van. We did add on the full kitchen and toilet. We bought a few extra cooking supplies, but besides that, everything you needed was supplied. It was cold for most of our trip, so we couldn’t utilize the van to its fullest in terms of outside space, but the heater kept us warm on those cold nights. It would have been nice to have an extra table inside to set things on. On the warmer days and less windy days, we did pull the back slide out and cook on there. We fit perfectly in the Iron Mountain tunnels, but be sure to avoid Needles Highway. Our trip was in April so the Badlands & Wind Cave area was not crowded at all. Many times we didn’t see anyone for miles and miles. Be sure to take roads less traveled and explore. We saw more animals on Lame Johnny Road than the Wildlife Loop. In April not much was open, but we didn’t mind. We stopped at a local coop market in Rapid City and stocked up before we headed out. The fridge was big enough to hold food and beer for four days for us. Grab some local visitors guides of Custer State Park and the Badlands area, they give a great overview of the area, animals, and things to do.

Loved the van! Was nice and clean, well stocked with anything you might need. Hosts were great about communicating and providing extra blankets, etc. when needed. Easy pick up and drop off.
