The small man-made lake, known as Lake Abilene, was formed in the early 1930s. The city of Abilene realized it needed a source of water and enlisted the aid of Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to construct a dam. The CCC was a part of the New Deal created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to provide jobs to hundreds of thousands of people affected by the Great Depression. Anticipating the potential for Lake Abilene to turn into a recreational spot, CCC also built a stone water tower and a swimming pool as well as planted hundreds of trees.

The region’s history goes back long before pioneers and settlers descended upon central Texas. Comanche Native Americans camped and hunted in the woods that would later become known as Abilene State Park. An occasional arrowhead and pottery shards can still be found in the woods, evidence of their presence.
