The Croydon township was originally a part of a plantation owned by the Barnsley family through several generations from late 1700s till early 1900s. Though the name of the plantation was Tatham Plantation, Major John Barnsley often referred to it as Croydon, a reference to a town in England where he was born.
On the outskirts of the Tatham plantation, Andreas Everardus van Braam Houckgeest purchased a little over 400 acres in 1797 to create what he called the China Retreat. Van Braam Houckgeest was a Dutch entrepreneur who visited China often while working for the Dutch East India Company and fell in love with the country. With a burning desire to share the country with Americans, he imported thousands of artifacts, art items, and furniture. Some of his notable guests included President George Washington and Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette. Van Braam Houckgeest exhausted his funds, sold the property, and died in obscurity. The property itself changed hands several times over the year, and in 1970s, was quietly razed to create what is now the Neshaminy State Park Marina.
Though a quiet town, Croydon’s proximity to one of the arteries into Philadelphia and the Delaware River makes it a terrific place to visit.
The closest large town is Levittown about seven miles northeast.
