A great way to start is to set out on foot to explore New Glarus Woods State Park's eight-mile network of hiking trails. There are trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels available, so study a trail map and route descriptions before starting your walk. If you're after something easy, either Basswood Nature Trail or the Bison Nature Trail should fit the bill perfectly. If you're after something a little more challenging, the Havenridge Nature Trail wanders for just over four miles and offers the best opportunity to explore the park's varied terrain. It's also worth bringing your bike along when packing for your New Glarus Woods State Park camping trip. If you set out on the Sugar River trail spur in the park, you'll soon link up with the excellent Sugar River State Trail. This 24-mile trail leads to the villages of Monticello, Albany, and Brodhead, providing an invigorating adventure for keen explorers. It's an easy trail that runs along an old railway, and also links with the 40-mile Badger State Trail just outside of Monticello. Hunting and trapping are also permitted in the park's open areas, but the other most popular recreational activity in New Glarus Woods State Park takes place in winter. All trails in the park are open to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, so winter sports enthusiasts are well catered for. The trails aren't groomed, so they're not ideal for skiers of all levels, but they offer a peaceful opportunity for exploration and exercise when the cold weather hits.
