Friendly but inconsistent and vague

Ryan is often friendly and communicative, but delegated pickups to unfamiliar friends and provided vague explanations regarding a discrepancy in damage repair costs.

Drives well but serious disrepair

While generally driving well and having good fuel economy, the vehicle has serious reported safety issues, a leaking lavatory, duct-taped windows, and numerous interior and amenity malfunctions.

The experience was very disappointing to say the least. It started out with the host being unable to be there when we picked up the unit. He had a friend do the key drop, which would not have been bad, but it was obvious the friend was not familiar with the unit. On initial inspection of the unit a majority of the windows on the unit were duct taped closed. I asked if they could be opened and was told that they would not seal completely when closed which was why they were duct taped, but that I could take the tape off. So cosmetic issue, fine.In addition the running board on the entrance appeared to be damaged so was extremely spongey to walk on. The description of this unit said " A king-sized bed along with our hammock style bunks should be able to accommodate your entire family. " and included a picture of the hammock . When I asked the friend about the hammock, he didn't know. We contacted Ryan, and he told us that it couldn't be setup it was broken or not easy to setup. We had planned for our son to sleep in the hammock and brought a sleeping bag for him, so this meant for the entire 6 day trip, our son had to sleep with us. It was a tight fit for the family to say the least. The description also said "Sleep 4 comfortably with a king bed & bunks; enjoy leather seating & included essentials." and "What's included Fresh linens are always used". Once we got to a place to stock up, it turned up there were No pillows, a velour comforter that smelled of dog, and a foam topper with a ripped cover over it. Unfortunately we had just flown into WI and these were not things we brought, so we had to purchase pillows, sheets and towels for the trip. Incidentally when we got to the place to stock up, the friend who had shown us the unit, had forgotten to take pictures of the unit and get mileage before we left, so he tracked us down at the Dollar General to get these. Once we got going the unit seemed to drive fine, but pulled slightly to the right, probably needs an alignment done. The next issue was the lavatory. It seemed to have an odor about it, so I tried to turn on the lavatory vent. This never appeared to work, both plugged in as well as on generator power. On a related note the description says "The solar option will allow you to stay off the grid if you choose." I saw no solar panel on the van so I highly doubt that this exists. If it does, then I should have been instructed on how to use it. All through the trip we continued to notice the smell from the lavatory (especially at night, which made sleeping a bit more unenjoyable) . We just happened to be sitting outside the unit looking at it when someone flushed the toilet in it. Water poured out of the unit on the side where the lavatory was, so this may have been part of the problem with the smell. When I went to dump the black water, it was much less than I would have expected. Overall the unit has seen better days. Screens were missing on the some of the opening vent windows, the refrigerator had dents in it and stuck constantly. A metal panel next to the refrigerator was loose the entire trip and rattled while driving. The window shades were duct-taped or had some other method to hold them up. To end the trip, I was pulling into a tight area to get gas and grazed a pylon and scraped the driver side rear fender (picture). It popped the wheel well cover off slightly and left some paint on the vehicle. I put the cover back on and but the paint was still on. When we got to the host I explained what happened and that I felt badly about it. He said he would have someone look at it and get back to me on cost. A couple of days later, he texted me saying he had a buddy that could fix it for $200 that I could Venmo money to. Almost as soon as I got that text, I got an email from Outdoorsy saying that $288 had been taken from the security deposit. When I told him this he responded saying, "Oh I didn't think that went through". While I am more than willing to pay for my mistake, it does seem a bit suspicious that he would say it would cost $200 to fix and yet charge $250 in the app (apparently the extra $38 is a outdoorsy service charge). On the positive side, the host was gracious enough to meet us at the airport for the dropoff.

The process of renting the RV through Outdoorsy was easy, and we appreciated the communication by Outdoorsy leading up to the trip, providing updates and helpful tips. However, the RV had serious safety issues, and we had to return it two hours after we picked it up. It seemed insult added to injury that we were charged for one day insurance for this experience, which - without exaggeration - put our lives at risk. In addition, we lost the money on the campsites we had booked. While the host was very apologetic and seemed to be a genuinely nice guy, the overall experience of this “trip” was unfortunately truly “terrible”

Frequently asked questions

Q.

What flexibility is available for picking up and dropping off the RV?

A.

As far as picking up, it would depend on if the vehicle has been cleaned up from the previous renter. I would prefer pickup to be 3pm or later and drop off by 11am or earlier on the date of return.
