The combined parks belong to a watershed that protects the water resources for local communities; the parks also provide recreational space where visitors can experience nature up close. Mianus River State Park has a variety of deciduous and evergreen tree stands that include maple, oak, birch, and other tree species. On the ground, ferns, wildflowers, and grasses provide habitat and protection for the grouse, rabbits, and other wildlife that live here. Camping near Mianus River State Park puts all of this nature right at your doorstep.

RV camping at Mianus River State Park will provide you with an opportunity to spot the bird, mammal, and amphibian species that reside in or pass through the park. Volunteers who help to manage the park have been assisted by the Audubon Society in developing the park to attract wildlife. More than 150 species of birds and 15 different mammal species have been observed; many of the bird species are migratory and can be spotted at different times of the year. The mammals tend to be shy and can be spotted in less trafficked areas of the park.

Devil's Den Preserve, near Redding, is a historically significant nature preserve, having been settled as early as 5,000 years ago; it was an important region in the 1800s due to commercial charcoal production. Devil's Den is also known as Lucius Pond Ordway and was given this name in honor of Katharine Ordway, who played a large role in establishing the preserve. The park is open year-round except for specific dates during which managed deer hunting is conducted; it's an excellent destination for hiking and plant and wildlife observation.

The park is dissected by the Cross River and has a museum where you can view exhibits of the park's history. On your hiking excursions, you'll see the remains of low rock walls that were once the property boundaries of the farms that were there first.
