Mianus River State Park is an urban nature preserve open to the public and part of the larger Mianus River Park (which incorporates Mianus River State Park along with Mianus River and Natural Park). The combined parks belong to a watershed that protects the water resources for local communities; the parks also provide recreational space where visitors can experience nature up close. Mianus River State Park has a variety of deciduous and evergreen tree stands that include maple, oak, birch, and other tree species. On the ground, ferns, wildflowers, and grasses provide habitat and protection for the grouse, rabbits, and other wildlife that live here. Devil's Den Preserve, near Redding, is a historically significant nature preserve, having been settled as early as 5,000 years ago; it was an important region in the 1800s due to commercial charcoal production. Devil's Den is also known as Lucius Pond Ordway and was given this name in honor of Katharine Ordway, who played a large role in establishing the preserve. The park is open year-round except for specific dates during which managed deer hunting is conducted; it's an excellent destination for hiking and plant and wildlife observation.
Ward Pound Ridge Reservation is located in New York. It is a popular destination for hiking, although you also have the option of taking a driving tour in your Stamford motorhome rental. The park has a distinct and varied landscape, with stands of second-growth hardwood located amongst steep ravines, bold rock outcroppings, wetlands, and open meadows. The park is dissected by the Cross River and has a museum where you can view exhibits of the park's history. Adults can take some time out to enjoy fishing on the nearby lake, and families can enjoy the management-sponsored outdoor movies. Liberty Harbor RV Park is located 90 minutes' drive south in New Jersey and is a good choice if you're hoping to take day trips into downtown New York City. The campground is located just steps away from the New York Waterway Ferry that makes daily trips in each direction. The campground has restrooms with hot showers, a dump station, and an on-site restaurant. Each campsite has water and electric hookups and WiFi.
Stamford is a relatively larger city across the state border from Manhattan, New York; it is also an important tourist destination, with spectacular landmarks such as churches and museums boasting stunning architecture and much more. There are urban parks and arboretums which you can explore on your own, theaters and libraries, and breweries. Stamford's restaurant scene has it all, from inexpensive cafes to fine dining and almost any cuisine you might desire.
Greenwich is one of the largest towns along the Connecticut coast. It is a historically significant area and a good place to take a walking tour and enjoy the magnificent architecture of its churches and private homes. There are several art galleries for you to enjoy and a historic building, Putnam Cottage, which is named for the American Revolutionary War hero, General Israel Putnam.
