Let's start with a few questions to narrow down your options.
Although it’s unknown exactly when settlers first came to the area, records show that the tract of land that would become Phoenix was surveyed in 1793. The first known enterprise (other than farming) was started by Thomas Fulton, who built a factory in 1848. The factory processed cotton and made fabric. This business, owned by various companies, continued for nearly a hundred years. The infamous Warren Manufacturing Company was one such owner. The company was notorious for mistreatment of its workers. They also employed children as young as 10 years old. Many workers, including children, were required to put in between 10 and 14 hours of labor daily. In the 1860s, Phoenix’s workers struck and were one of the few strikers who successfully negotiated better terms: a typical workday would no longer exceed 10 hours. Their success may well have been the lit match that fueled improved working conditions and human rights revolution across America.
