Great Brook Farm State Park was created in 1967 and covers over 1,000 acres. The state park is best known for being home to an active dairy farm as well as old settlements from Native Americans and European settlers. It also contains Meadow Pond, which is a favorite canoeing spot in the area.

Hikers have many pathways they can choose to trek down, such as the Great Brook Farm Woodchuck, Chicken, and Beaver Trail. This pathway is almost five miles long and loops around the grounds. Along the way, you might also catch a glimpse of one of the many historical sites hidden within the woods, like sacred Native American areas and 17th-century cellar holes.

You could also explore the dairy farm. The farm is home to numerous milking cows, which you can meet while here. Visitors can also ask farmers questions and see how milk is made. When you’re done, you could taste some homemade ice cream at the park’s ice cream stand that sells a variety of delicious flavors.

Birdwatching is yet another outdoor activity to do while at the park. You’ll many different species flying through the park, like grebes, ducks, nightjars, cuckoos, and quail. Visitors can tour the interior where they’ll be able to learn more about early American life. During the summer, there is a large garden filled with fragrant heirloom plants visitors can wander through. Various programs are also held at the home, including lectures by historians and theatrical performances.

In Lowell, there’s the New England Quilt Museum. This museum displays numerous quilts from the 19th-century, most of which focus on New England themes. Visitors could also stop by the museum to attend the Lowell Quilt Festival or hear lectures by famous quilters. There is a museum store where museum-goers can buy unique souvenirs.

Less than half-an-hour away in Waltham is Gore Place. This historic home was built in 1806 to be the summer home of Christoper Gore, a local politician. Today, it now serves as a local history museum. Visitors can take a guided tour of the home’s interior, where they’ll be able to view antiques and learn more about Gore’s life. Some rooms the tour will take you through include a carriage house, breakfast room, billiard room, and servant chambers. Besides this, Gore Place hosts a variety of events during the year, such as a floral design show, sheep shearing festival, and concerts.
