Lac La Belle is located on the far northern shore of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This small lake site sits on a peninsula that juts almost halfway into the large, Lake Superior. Small Lac La Belle is found on the shores of that large lake, and it contains a short channel that actually empties into the much larger body of water. This is a very rural part of the state. There are several tiny communities near the lake, such as Copper Harbor, which is about 15 miles to the northeast. However, the nearest larger town is Houghton, MI, almost 40 miles to the southwest. The nearest big city is Green Bay, WI, which is more than 250 miles to the south.
Although this area is rural, it is also quite scenic. Lac La Belle is situated within the heavily forested portion of the state. This region caters more to wild animals than people. This makes it ideal to enjoy outdoor recreational activities. Hiking, camping, hunting, and scenic drives are available in the summer, while snowmobiling and other winter sports reign supreme up here during the long winter season.
An RV rental near Lac La Belle will give you the chance to participate in activities throughout the year. This lake isn't large, but boating and fishing are both enjoyed here. Swimming is an option as well, during the warmer months. In addition, the coves, wetlands, and other waterways that branch off of the lake can be easily explored using a canoe or kayak.
The Beta Gris Preserve is a wetland area that sits between this lake and nearby Lake Superior. Hiking, fishing, and non-motorized winter sports, such as cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, are all enjoyed here. This is a prime place for viewing the waterfowl that frequent this type of ecosystem.
Haven Waterfalls and Park is located nearby. Walking trails and a small stream of water that cascades down the rocks make this a picturesque spot. Ruins of an old copper mill are available for viewing, as well. This location makes for a nice rest stop on your drive, as picnic facilities and bathrooms are available as well.
Camping with an RV is not difficult near Lac La Belle. There are several different campgrounds available, all which know how to make visitors feel welcome.
Wilderness Resort sits near the north shore of the lake. Sites with hookups are available, as are showers, bathrooms, and WiFi. Pets are welcome to stay here with you, and both short and long-term reservations can be made.
Sunset Bay RV Resort and Campground is located about 20 miles to the west of the lake. Campsites with hookups are offered, as are bathrooms and a laundry facility. This park is open the middle of May through the middle of October. Motorhome camping in this region makes it easy to reach any nearby attraction you are interested in.
Rent a camper in Keweenaw County, MI, and you will have easy access to many different activities. The Copper Harbor Lighthouse sits on a spit of land that overlooks the southern shores of Lake Superior. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and is a State Historic Site. During the busy, summer months this location is open for touring. Historical information about the nearby area is available as well. Should you enjoy scenic drives, the Brockway Mountain Drive follows State Highway 26, which runs right along the northern shore of the peninsula. This is known as a prime place to view the vibrant fall colors this part of the state is well-known for. The ride also runs to the top of one of the highest points around, offering expansive views of the surrounding forested countryside and nearby Lake Superior.
The Quincy Mine is an old copper mine that is located near Houghton. Guided tours of some of the mine buildings and its workings are offered during the summer. There is also a museum that highlights the history of the copper mining industry in this part of the country. There is a historic park that surrounds the mill that is available to explore, as well.
