One of the best things about visiting the town of Mason is how many great opportunities there are for outdoor recreation nearby. One of the closest and most popular is Hawk Island Park in Lansing. It plays host to a fantastic waterpark in addition to its many hiking and biking trails; the kids will especially enjoy the splash pad on a hot summer day. There’s also the River Trail in Lansing, which extends for 13 miles along the Grand and Red Cedar River from Michigan State University to Dietrich Park. The park is home to multiple festivals throughout the year, so you may want to check their schedule to see if anything exciting is happening during your visit. Another great green space is Burchfield Park near the town of Holt. The park is huge and mostly undeveloped, beckoning visitors to explore the extensive network of trails running through its forests. If you’re into disc golf, there’s also a decent course laid out over the park. However, if you’d prefer a more traditional game of golf, there are several great courses within easy driving distance of Mason. If you’re looking for watersports though, Sleepy Hollow State Park, which lies not too far north of Lansing, could be a great choice. The massive Lake Orvid is its centerpiece and is a great place for renting a kayak and paddling around for a few hours. If you have the proper license, there are also several species of game fish including muskellunge and channel catfish that are great fun to catch.
