Discover High Point State Park

New Jersey is blessed with stunning outdoors, and the state is home to several state parks that are great for a motorhome camping trip. One such park is High Point State Park that’s located on the border of Wantage Township and Montague Township in the northeastern part of the state. Located just outside of Sussex, the park is indeed the highest point in all of New Jersey with the Kittatinny Mountains’ High Point peak that sits in the northern reaches of the park.

Covering over 15,000 acres of parkland, High Point State Park is also known for the High Point Monument that stands at a height of 1803 feet above sea level. The views of rich farmlands, lush forests, valleys, and hills of the three states of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York can be appreciated from this stunning vantage point in the park.

An RV is a convenient way of traveling through the area, and you’ll find a range of affordable RV rentals in Sussex County. Not too far from the state park is Hopatcong and Newark that you could also check out during your vacation.

There are several small lakes and streams scattered through the park that offer excellent fishing opportunities, including the two popular ones – Lake Marcia and Sawmill Lake. The lakes are well stocked with trout, largemouth bass, pickerel, perch, and sunfish.

Bring your watercraft along and enjoy boating at Sawmill Lake and Steenykill Lake. Powerboats with electric motors are permitted as well as canoes, kayaks, and pontoon boats.

Camping at High Point State Park is a delight for hikers. With more than 50 miles of trails to explore, hikers have a variety of trails to choose from, differing in difficulty levels. There are designated multi-use trails for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and in winter months for cross-country skiing, dog sledding, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. From anywhere between half a mile to 18 miles, trails meander through diverse landscapes.

There are designated swimming areas at Lake Marcia, where you get to enjoy a cool dip in the hot summer months. The 20-acre lake has lifeguards on duty along with a bathhouse and food concession close by. Swimming is only permitted at the lake during certain hours.
