The famous Appalachian Trail runs directly through the forest, and hikers can enjoy a 12.5 miles segment of it when making use of the campgrounds. The trail follows the Kittatinny Mountain Ridge along a rocky and sometimes narrow pathway. However, by following this tricky terrain, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. In addition to this main trail, there are also 33 miles of trails through the forest, all of which vary in length and difficulty. Many of these all connect with each other, offering hours of hiking fun before heading back to the campground.

Located in the state forest is Stony Lake, which during the summer months is used for swimming in the cool waters. Lifeguards are on duty for safety, and there is also a small beach complex with changing facilities, so visitors can enjoy a day on the sands in comfort. Although boating is not allowed on this lake, it is allowed on Lake Ocquittunk.

When it comes to fishing, Big Flatbrook and its many tributaries provide some of the best trout fishing in the state. Both lakes are also well stocked, so there is plenty of room for everyone to cast their line. The N.J. Fish and game regularly stock the lake with both rainbow and brown trout, and perch, bass, and pickerel can also be found in the area. With such an abundance of fish, it is no wonder that so many people rent a camper near Stokes State Forest.

There are 51 campsites in Stokes State Forest, all of which have fire rings and picnic tables next to them. Some of these sites are available to use year-round, ideal if you are looking to explore the area and go RV camping at Stokes State Forest in the offseason.

There are two main state park RV campgrounds available. The Steam Mill campground runs on a first come first served basis. There are minimal facilities at this site, so ideal for those that prefer a bit more of a primitive experience. There is, however, an artisan well and pit toilets available for campers use. Ocquittunk also offers minimalist camping, surrounded by beautiful woodlands. Lastly, there is the Shotwell Campgrounds, all of which have a BBQ grill and fire rings. There is access to drinking water at this site, and there are vault toilets nearby. Ten group sites are also available that can accommodate up to 30 people.

For those that enjoy a little arts and crafts, just a few miles away is the Peters Valley School of Craft, set in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. These state-of-the-art studios run a series of workshops throughout the year run by professional artists from all over the world. whether you are a seasoned artist or are just looking to try something new, this could be a fantastic way to spend the day and come away with something fantastic you have created.

Another great attraction for families is the Space Farm Zoo, located not far from the forest. The zoo and museum cover nearly 100 acres and is home to more than 500 animals including bears, leopards, tigers, monkeys and more. In the zoo, there are nine museum buildings which are home to around 50 antique cars, old farm machinery, Indian artifacts, an antique firearms collection and much more. The zoo and museums offer a full day out and are in easy reaching distance of Stokes State Forest camping facilities.

For old and young, the Land of Make Believe is a truly magical place, ideal for a day out with the whole family. The park has it all, amusement park rides, water park rides and a number of eateries. Some of the favorite rides include the Tornado, Sidewinder, Cannonball, Drop and Twist, Pirate’s Luge and much more. The park provides hours of fun and is a chance for parents to become kids again and enjoy the adventures with their children.
