South River hasn’t changed much in the past 200 years, aside from a few minor details like the addition of electric street lights and stop lights. It’s unknown precisely when the first immigrants arrived. There are references to a ferry/port on the South River as early as 1683, and there were a few residents in the area. For a time, this settlement was called Willetstown in honor of a prominent townsman, Samuel Willett. In 1784, as General Washington gained some reputation, the town voted to change its name to Washington Village. Nearly a hundred years later, the town once again elected to change the name to South River.

In the late 1800s, South River was in particular known for its factory, which produced fine ladies’ clothing, embroidery, and lace. It was a hub for “needle trade” on the South River, and at one point, there were 12 Swiss factories in this town.

Today, South River is a quiet bedroom community for New Brunswick and other larger towns, New York City included. Many of the homes are historic, dating back to the turn of the century or before.

The Great Outdoors

It’s a smart outdoorsman who rents an RV, rather than rough it outdoors in a flimsy tent. New Jersey, particularly in the north, is notorious for having vicious swarms of mosquitoes and humid summers. Many of the neighborhoods in northern New Jersey were, after all, built on top of swamps and wetlands. Don’t let that deter you from exploring the outdoors. Cheesequake State Park in Matawan is an interesting pocket of wilderness. Several different ecosystems have merged, making for an odd mix off terrain: meadows, hardwood groves, cedar swamp, and salt- and freshwater wetlands. As a result, there is a diverse population of wildlife, ranging from maritime seabirds to deer typically found in deep woods. Though hunting isn’t permitted, a nature photographer will enjoy this park.

A South River camper rental will make it easy to commune and become one with nature. Head down to Wharton State Forest, a huge 122,000-acre park, and meditate on the value of preserving old-growth forests for the future. This park has well over 100 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. Rock climbers are often spotted spidering across sheer slabs of granite and limestone.

RV Parks

When you book an RV rental in South River, NJ, be sure to figure out where you’ll park overnight. In the dense suburban neighborhoods of northern New Jersey, street parking is disallowed, and campgrounds are few and far in between. Both Cheesequake State Park and Allaire State Park near Farmingdale, allow RVs and trailers. Although there are restrooms and shower facilities at both, there are no hookups. Space at both parks are limited, book well in advance.

Alternatively, consider a private campground. There are a handful of options down south. Indian Rock RV Park and Campground in Jackson, is very close to Six Flags Great Adventure, and it includes full hookups and several other amenities like a swimming pool and daily activities for families.

Butterfly Camping Resort bills itself as a family-friendly, old-school style campground. In addition to fun activities and games like a dunk tank, there is an arcade with retro games, miniature golf, and homemade sundaes on Saturdays.

Exploring the City

Hop into your South River RV rental and explore the downtown area. Many homes and buildings are historic, built in the Revival Tudor style. Continue the tour of historic homes by visiting the neighboring towns like New Brunswick and Edison.

New Brunswick, just a few minutes away, offers a huge array of activities and fun. Stroll the halls of the Zimmerli Art Museum and study the works of old masters from early 1700s and 1800s or examine the modern, abstract sculptures of today’s premier artists. Step a million years back into time and witness a herd of mastodons roam North America at the Rutgers Geology Museum. Ancient dinosaurs, giant mammals and insects’ fossils are on display within its halls, looking as though as they could come to life at any moment.

Across the river, hear the voices of mysterious strangers from a bygone era. The Thomas Edison Center has the original phonograph and several recordings, and several other artifacts dreamed up by the world-famous inventor Edison. The interpretive exhibits detail the struggles Edison endured and how his life transformed as he was finally recognized for his distinguished mind.

The Starland Ballroom in Sayreville is a local favorite that’ll get your toes tapping. A small concert venue, up-and-coming and veteran entertainers are frequently on stage, honing their act. David Lee Roth from Van Halen, Bon Jovi’s Wild ones, Richie Sambora, and many others all performed at this venue in their early careers. The locals can say: “I saw them before they got big.” Join them!

Grab a birch beer, a local delicacy that New Jersey is known for, and escape the hordes of mosquitoes in your South River motorhome rental.
