Nestled alongside the South River, Spotswood, NJ was named by a Scottish gentleman, James Johnston, who was homesick for his hometown, “Spottiswoode.” Johnston, who was the first inhabitant, built a home and a mill in 1685. The town itself was officially founded in 1908. Spotswood has retained much of its old-town charm. Mature oaks and maples line its streets, and at Christmastime, the locals light the tree and sing Christmas carols at “the Triangle,” an unofficial name for the intersection of Main Street, Park Avenue, and Snowhill Road. The downtown main street didn’t even get sidewalks until the late 80s. Every Memorial Day, children and adults alike form a parade and march down Main Street.
