Discover Twin Lake RV rentals for memorable road trips
Twin Lake was dammed and used to supplement the factory’s water needs at the now-defunct McKean Chemical Company in Pennsylvania. US Forest Services obtained the lakes and the surrounding land in the 1920s, and it sat unused for a few years. The Civilian Conservation Corporation, as a part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal program, tore down the original dam, which was poorly constructed, and rebuilt a new one in its place. CCC also built the campground and play area, anticipating a future recreational use. They originally planned to dam the other “twin” lake, but the funding was instead diverted to a different recreational area. That other twin lake has since then dwindled and lost its “lake” status.
The closest large town is Kane, PA, about 10 miles north of Twin Lake. This town is the best spot for picking up forgotten necessities and supplies. Getting Outdoors
A part of the Allegheny National Forest, which encompasses a little over half a million acres, Twin Lake is a popular retreat for anglers and adventurers. Tall black cherry, maple, and other hardwoods intermingle with pine trees, towering over the tiny Twin Lake. Native trout teem in the dark waters, practically leaping into nets and boats. Anglers have the choice between fishing from the banks or the pier. Boats are not permitted on this small lake. When winter rolls around, and the bitter cold sets in, the lake frequently ices over. Stalwart, stubborn fishermen embark out onto the ice in pursuit of fresh fish. The north end of Twin Lake has been set aside for a beach. Soft tan grains of sand contour the coastline, inviting games of volleyball and disc golf on a sunny day.Hikers and explorers have a few short miles of trails around the lake to roam. These trails connect to longer ones that spider out into the vast Allegheny National Forest. The trails wind to and fro, up and down the mountainsides, crossing streams and valleys. Lights are filtered in dappled blotches by the dense green canopy overhead. Fleeing white-tailed deer bolt through the woods, recognized only by the tell-tale flash of whitetails. Many other wild creatures share these woods, including shy black bear, porcupines, foxes, and coyotes. In the wetlands area, river otters and beavers swim the tea-stained waters. In open spaces, hawks, eagles, and even an occasional turkey buzzard soar high above in lazy circles.Rockhounds and fossil hunters, take note. Many minerals, gems, and fossils have been found in this area. Common finds include gold, quartz variants, trilobites, leaves and fern prints, corals, and other marine creatures.Cross partway the massive Kinzua Gorge via an old railroad bridge-turned-footpath in Kinzua Bridge State Park. The bridge, which was once the longest and tallest railroad bridge in the United States, was partially destroyed in 2003 by a rare tornado. Hike down into the picturesque gorge and look for owls which are known to have nests in the area.
Camping at Twin Lakes
In this remote part of Pennsylvania, traveling from a motel to Twin Lake will eat up considerable time that could be spent enjoying the wilderness. Camp at Twin Lake Campground, which offers electric hookups, drinking water, and flush toilets. There are around 50 sites to choose from. Dogs are permitted. Heads-up: the main access road goes through a low train tunnel, and vehicles taller than ten feet will need to detour to a different route.Another option to consider is RV camping at Dewdrop Campground, on the north end of Allegheny National Forest, near Warren. The RV campground is located in an open grassy meadow, which becomes dewy most mornings. Although there are no hookups, the views may be worth the trade-off.
Exploring the Area
After a few days stomping around in the wilderness, sometimes it’s necessary to interact with fellow humans and explore the quaint shops, charming restaurants, and other small businesses in small towns scattered across the mountains. A rental motorhome makes it easy to reach the far-apart towns and find all the cute hole-in-wall shops and pubs. In spite of the harsh winters, grapevines thrive well in the lush soil. Copper Fox Winery in Kersey, PA, is an award-winning vineyard that specializes in dry whites (red varietals are available, too). Many towns are home to antique stores that also sells local artwork like woodcrafts, handmade furniture, and even pottery. At the end of a long day of adventure and sightseeing, build a campfire in a fire ring, kick up your heels, and enjoy the dark, starry skies. Find your perfect RV camping adventure in Allegheny National Park and make memories with the family.
We’re a family of four and rented Daisy the Airstream for a weekend in the Catskills and truly the best experience! It was delivered right to our campsite, spotless and ready to go. After a quick walkthrough on how everything worked, we were all set. Daisy was super clean, cozy, and made our trip so special. We already can’t wait to rent her again! You will love it!
