Lake Fort Phantom Hill is very close to Fort Phantom Hill, one of the best-preserved historical sites in the state of Texas. The United States and Confederate Army used the fort from 1852 up until the 1890s. It has been abandoned ever since. This army installation became open to the public in the 1990s and features several old buildings that are in pristine condition. These include a guardhouse made of stone and a warehouse. The city of Abilene even provides a guided tour of this historical site.
