Gettysburg National Military Park is a monument to the Battle of Gettysburg, one of the most important battles in the American Civil War. Michaux State Forest is a multi-use preserve that provides natural resources such as timber and gas to communities, a refuge for wildlife, and opportunities for outdoor recreation. It was named after a French botanist, Andre Michaux, and was the site of Pennsylvania's first forestry school. Much of the forest consists of varieties of oak tree stands, with smaller numbers of maple, birch, pine, and other species. This gives a special appearance to the forest, which is situated on metavolcanic and quartzite rock. You'll see this as you explore the trails that wander through on foot or bike. Fishing, picnicking, and hunting are allowed, and there is a shooting range in the forest. Camping near Michaux State Forest means you can bring your catch from the water to your RV fridge. Caledonia State Park is one of four state parks located on South Mountain in the Blue Ridge Mountain range. The park is open to the public year-round during daylight hours, and it has camping facilities should you wish to spend the night. The park has well-established trails that explore the park's vast region, so you could spend days hiking the park and still not see it all. There is a park ranger's office, and informational activities are arranged.
