With a range of both natural and historical features, Pine Grove State Park has a lot to offer those who pay it a visit. The beautiful mountain setting is surrounded by the Michaux State Forest and contains two large scenic lakes. The park is located in the state of Pennsylvania, and many people choose to rent an RV in Cumberland County to explore this natural environment. Plus, with towns such as Carlisle, Harrisburg, and Gettysburg nearby, it is very accessible.

The area protects the remains of the Pine Grove Ironworks and was also the site of Laurel Forge, and a brick plant, meaning there is a lot of history to explore. Fuller Lake is a former quarry from the ironworks, and Laurel Lake was created to supply water to the forge. Today, they provide visitors with a range of recreational activities, from boating to fishing, and on dry land, visitors can hike, nature watch, picnic, relax, ski, and more.

Getting Outdoors

There is an abundance of hiking trails in Pine Grove Furnace State Park, but one of the most well used is the beautiful Appalachian Trail. Overall the trail runs for over 2000 miles, and the park sits around about the middle of it, so chances are you'll only be able to complete a small portion of it on your motorhome camping adventure. Overall there are four miles of hiking trail in the park itself. For a shorter but extremely scenic trail, the Pole Steeple should not be missed, and you'll have stunning views of the entire park from the quartzite rock outcropping.

Boating is permitted on the 25 acres Laurel Lake which is located in the park. There is a boat launch here, so visitors can choose to either bring their own boat or rent one from around the shore. Opt for either a leisurely boating trip, bobbing around and admiring the view, or try your luck with a rod, fishing for pickerel, perch, and stocked trout. The smaller Fuller Lake is also accessible for fishing, as is Mountain Creek, which runs through the park. The creek contains brown, brook, and rainbow trout.

When you go state park RV camping in the winter, the recreational fun does not stop, as there are plenty of winter activities to get involved with. A small area on Laurel Lake is maintained for ice skating, while ice fishing is permitted on the rest of the lake. When show conditions allow, Nordic skiers can hit the trails and enjoy the use of the railroad grade, and snowmobiling is also possible in certain areas.

There are around 70 tent and trailer sites located directly in Pine Grove Furnace State Park, which are open throughout the whole year. Facilities include a seasonal camp store and a dump station located near the entrance of the park.

For a more resort-style experience at Pine Grove Furnace State Park, Deer Run Camping Resort offers a huge range of amenities for guests to make use of. There are many spacious, full hookup sites available, and sites also come with WiFi and cable TV. To keep the kids entertained, there are many options such as adventure mini-golf, a swimming pool, and kids swimming pool, a children's play area, wagon rides, there is even a dog park for a furry friend or two. There is also a range of sports courts and activities during holiday weekends.

Exploring the Area

Take the kids to Mister Eds Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium, one of the area's most unique attractions. In the candy store, there are over 900 varieties of candy spanning back through history, including more than 100 flavors of creamy homemade fudge. In the Elephant Museum, there are more than 12,000 figurines, circus figurines, toys, and lots more.

Rent a camper near Pine Grove Furnace State Park for a little bit of history by heading to the 1863 home of the John Rupp family. Inside the house are a number of exhibits that tell the story of civilian life before and after the Battle of Gettysburg, encouraging families to explore through the interactive displays. A different type of history can be discovered at the Lincoln Train Museum, containing a huge range of collections covering everything from politics to sport.

You'll find a huge range of ghost tours and haunted walks in Gettysburg, which is very close to the park. Ideal for fans of all things spooky, these tours will be led by costumed and knowledgeable storytellers, who will guide you through the streets of this historic town, giving you an insight into a different side of history. Walk by candlelight and listen to some ghostly tales based on the book of 'Historic Gettysburg,' which is one of America's most haunted towns.
