Gunpowder, Maryland is a borough on the outskirts of Baltimore. Named after the Gunpowder River which the town straddles, Gunpowder was founded in the 17th century by John Smith who explored the river and discovered iron ore, which would eventually help in the industrialization of the Baltimore area. The name Gunpowder was given to the city by James Denton, who discovered saltpeter in the stream, the main ingredient in gunpowder.

This state park is now one of the largest in Maryland, so it is ideal if you're looking to escape to nature. One notable part is the central area, which contains the Big and Little Gunpowder Falls; this part of the park is also ideal for water recreation, with fishing and kayaking being favorite activities.

There are lots of campgrounds around the Baltimore area to consider when you rent an RV in Gunpowder. One of the closest to Gunpowder is Bar Harbor RV Park Marina near Abingdon. Bar Harbor is located on the bay as well, so there are plenty of recreational activities, including fishing and boating.

Gunpowder is a small place, but it's on the outskirts of Baltimore, so any necessities can be found in the city. There's plenty to do in Baltimore -- one great place to visit is the National Aquarium.
