Gunpowder, Maryland is a borough on the outskirts of Baltimore. Named after the Gunpowder River which the town straddles, Gunpowder was founded in the 17th century by John Smith who explored the river and discovered iron ore, which would eventually help in the industrialization of the Baltimore area. The name Gunpowder was given to the city by James Denton, who discovered saltpeter in the stream, the main ingredient in gunpowder.

This state park is now one of the largest in Maryland, so it is ideal if you're looking to escape to nature. The state park is divided into six areas -- each offers different experiences and terrains, including beaches and waterfalls. One notable part is the central area, which contains the Big and Little Gunpowder Falls; this part of the park is also ideal for water recreation, with fishing and kayaking being favorite activities.

Bar Harbor is located on the bay as well, so there are plenty of recreational activities, including fishing and boating.
Exploring the City
Gunpowder is a small place, but it's on the outskirts of Baltimore, so any necessities can be found in the city. There's plenty to do in Baltimore -- one great place to visit is the National Aquarium. The perfect way to spend the day with the family, visitors are welcome to tour this vast aquarium with nearly 20,000 animals on display, including sharks, turtles, and dolphins.
