Getting Outdoors

A 40 mile stretch of the world world-renowned Appalachian Trail traverses the length of South Mountain State Park, which offers access to a number of scenic overlooks such as High Rock, Black Rock, and the Waverton Cliffs. Due to the length of the Appalachian Trail, many people prefer to simply pick a section and just hike for a few miles before heading back to their rental RV. Go for a simple day hike, an overnight excursion, or a multiday hike as part of your adventure.

Rock climbing is another great activity for those that go camping at South Mountain State Park. This itself makes it very popular as Maryland is not known for its rock climbing spots. There are four noticeable places to climb along South Mountain. Annapolis Rocks is particularly heavily climbed despite the fact that it is a 2.5-mile steep hike to reach it. There are several large outcrops here, which makes the climb varied and exciting. Black Crack is another good area, with some interesting bulges and steep jam crack climbing.

Nature lovers that book an RV near South Mountain State Park can try their luck spotting some of the creatures that call this forested area their home. Bring some binoculars with you on your motorhome camping trip, as you may have a chance of viewing black bears, meadow voles, raccoons, rat snakes, white-tailed deer, and opossums in their natural environment. You could also take your gaze to the skies to keep a lookout for a number of hawks, eagles, and owls, as well as a number of other bird species.

Camping at South Mountain State Park

Greenbrier Campground is located within the South Mountain area, but not directly in South Mountain State Park. The campground offers 165 developed campsites set into four distinct loops. These forested state park RV campgrounds are well maintained, and each offers its own separate shower building. Each site has a picnic table, firewood rack, lantern holder, and fire ring, and there is a central dump station for added convenience. Each loop also offers something a little different. For example, Cedar Loop offers electrical hookups, and both Cedar and Dogwood Loop allow dogs, so it is worth looking into where you should camp to suit your needs.

A family-friendly campground that is bound to give you lots of fun is Yogi Bears Jellystone Campground. The resort is so much more than just a campsite. There is a small waterpark located right on-site with 400-foot water slides, a ninja course, mini-golf, laser tag, and so much more. Whether you are looking for a premium RV site with full hookups or primitive camping experience, there are options for all.

Exploring the Area

A great and alternative attraction is Mr. Eds Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium. You'll be immersed in a world of candy, with tasty treats stretching back through history. There are more than 900 varieties of candy and more than 100 flavors of creamy fudge to choose from. The museum features more than 12,000 circus souvenirs, toys, and more. It truly is a fascinating place to visit, so grab the family and head on over.

There are a couple of interesting museums in the immediate area, great for a day trip when you rent a camper near South Mountain State Park. The Rose Manor Park and Museums present the life of Thomas Johnson, Maryland's first Governor, as well as the history of Frederick County. On the property, visitors can explore a manor house, log cabin, blacksmith shop, and two barns. The John Brown Wax Museum tells the story of John Brown and his raid on Harper's Ferry. Voice, music, and animation help to bring the 87 wax characters to life to tell the story in a unique and interactive way.
