Let's start with a few questions to narrow down your options.
Lake Shetek was formed by a mile-high glacier that left the area around 10,000 years ago, scraping and gouging as it retreated. The lake is the headwaters of the mighty Des Moines River. For hundreds of years before European settlers arrived, which was sometimes in the mid-1800s, Native American tribes roamed the prairie, hunting, and fishing. They observed that white pelicans frequently visited the lake on their biannual migration and named the lake Shetek, which is an Ojibwe word for pelican.
