Discover Lake Shetek RV rentals for memorable road trips

Lake Shetek was formed by a mile-high glacier that left the area around 10,000 years ago, scraping and gouging as it retreated. The lake is the headwaters of the mighty Des Moines River. For hundreds of years before European settlers arrived, which was sometimes in the mid-1800s, Native American tribes roamed the prairie, hunting, and fishing. They observed that white pelicans frequently visited the lake on their biannual migration and named the lake Shetek, which is an Ojibwe word for pelican.

Getting Outdoors

Encompassing around 3,600 acres, the large but shallow lake is lined by small groves of oaks and maples, which were introduced to the grasslands by pioneers in the late 1800s. Prior to their arrival, the entire region was devoid of trees. Due to the heavy moraine left by the glacier, the aquatic plant life in the lake is poor. As a result, the state of Minnesota regularly restocks this lake with various species of fish. Anglers can enjoy plying their trade from a boat, fishing pier, or from the banks. Walleye, yellow perch, crappie, northern pikes, and black bass are commonly caught.

Camping at Lake Shetek

Skip the long commute from a motel in the middle of nowhere. By renting an RV and RV camping at Lake Shetek, wake up in the mornings and set out onto the lake within minutes. Lake Shetek State Park has two public campgrounds for visitors to use: Oak Woods Campground has 32 sites with electric hookups, and a couple dozens more without. Sunrise Campground has 32 sites with full hookups. However, if guests need showers or restrooms, they will need to walk to Oak Woods, which is a short distance away.

Exploring the Area

Largely an agricultural region, towns are few and far apart. Many have their own unique flair and charm that makes vacationing in Minnesota a memorable adventure. Traveling from town to town is made painless with a rental motorhome. Many towns host festivals and fairs throughout the year to foster a sense of communities, and out-of-town visitors, of course, are encouraged to attend. Slayton is well known for its annual county fair, which is usually held in mid-August. Though the events change from year to year, the fair traditionally holds a baking contest, tractor-pull show, and barbecue cookoff. Delicious food, unique art and crafts, and loads of fun.

This was a GREAT little camper! Pick up/Set up was a breeze. Very clean and had everything we needed. Our host was very helpful and answered all of our questions. He also made sure to review everything on the camper. We camped remote on our lake property. We brought a generator that ran everything for us with no problems at all. We highly recommend this camper and will rent it again if it is still available when we take our next trip. Thank you Michael for making this such a great experience!
