Though the town was officially formed in 1868, the area of Washington saw Dutch settlers move to farm and establish mills as early as late 1700s. Prior to the immigrants, the main inhabitants were Lenape Native Americans and a handful of French traders and trappers, who often traded with the local tribes, and in the process, picked up some of the language. As a result, many geographical locations in New Jersey use Anglicized Lenape words today, such as Pascack, Musquapsink, and Hopatcong.

Today, there are very few original buildings still standing in Washington due to a major fire that destroyed a significant portion of the downtown district in 1962. One of the more notable ones is the Seven Chimney House, which is an 18th-century fieldstone home at which George Washington overnighted during his trip through New Jersey. The oldest building in Washington was officially built in 1756, but local historians believe it may have been built several years earlier, in 1732. It’s still in use today.

The closest large town is Hackettstown, about 12 miles northeast.

The Great Outdoors

Book an RV in Washington, and explore the wilderness from the comforts of your temporary home. Though a significant portion of eastern New Jersey consists of suburbia, there are several pockets of wilderness in northwestern New Jersey. Roaring Rock Park is a local gem. In springtime or after a heavy rainfall, the rush of the water of Brass Castle Creek hits large boulders in a certain way, creating a loud, sonorous roar. The park itself has a few miles of hiking trails. The terrain is especially hilly, which may be challenging for young children. Every spring, the creek is stocked with trout, and fishermen and fly-fishers are welcome to cast in this creek.

For more elbow room and isolation, Worthington State Park and the adjacent Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area might tick off the boxes. Between the two, there are well over 100 miles of hiking and biking trails. Fishing, of course, is popular. In summertime, when the winter snowmelt has waned, people flock to the Delaware River to go tubing, kayaking, and boating. In several spots, climbers can be spotted scaling the high, rugged limestone cliffs with nothing but sheer willpower and a thin rope to save them from crashing onto the wicked rocks down below. Deer, turkeys, foxes, and rabbits are abundant, providing a nature photographer plenty of models to use. The lucky one might spot a black bear, which are typically very timid - unless there are cubs around. In which case, watch out! They will not hesitate to charge you if they think you threatened their little ones. Bring your Washington camper rental as there are several parking lots to accommodate your rig.

RV Parks

Have you considered where you’ll park your Washington motorhome rental while you hit the sack? There are several RV friendly campgrounds in the area. Driftstone Campground, up near Delaware Water Gap National Recreational Area might be a good option. It features full hookups for your RV, an array of amenities like laundry and shower facilities, spotty WiFi (due to the trees), and easy access to the river.

Alternatively, Jugtown Mountain Campsites in Asbury may be a good candidate. Although it’s styled to be vintage, there are several modern amenities like updated restrooms and swimming pool, internet, and a store. A cute retro location for your travel trailer rental from Washington.

Exploring the City

One of the main advantages to exploring the rural areas of New Jersey is you have access to activities that aren’t available in an urban area. Embark on a hot-air balloon adventure! Ascend to 3,000 feet and enjoy the birds-eye view of the valley down below. The balloons typically launch at dawn or dusk because the weather is the most cooperative then. It’s also the most ideal time to photograph landscapes. The light is warm and golden, and the shadows are long and soft. InFlight Balloon Adventures offers twice-daily trips, and fly year-round, weather permitting. Call ahead to reserve.

When was the last time you enjoyed a community theater? Oftentimes “community theater” is associated with amateurs. On the contrary, many talented actors, comics, and entertainers pass through the smaller venues because they prefer smaller, more intimate audiences. Hunterdon Hills Playhouse regularly features headliners like Rex Smith who was in numerous major shows.

Hit the links! There are several excellent golf courses in the area, and while most are memberships clubs, several do allow non-members to play. Fairway Valley Golf Club, for example, is a family-friendly facility. The 18-hole course is lined with dogwood trees that blooms in springtime and mature oaks. If you make a hole-in-one, which is an impressive feat, the club will display your name and publish the accomplishment in the local newspaper.
