Greenwood Lake sits on the cusp of Sterling Forest State Park in the Mid-Hudson Region of New York. The southern portion of the lake extends across the border and into New Jersey, making it a convenient stop off for anyone road-tripping through either state; with the I-87 just ten minutes away, the towns of Newburgh, NY, and Morristown, NJ are just one road away from picturesque Greenwood Lake.

Being a ninety-minute drive away, Greenwood Lake has been a popular recreational spot for the people of New York City for centuries. In the 19th and 20th century the upper-class New Yorkers enjoyed Greenwood Lake as a place to socialize and spend their holidays. When the Eerie Railroad was established, Greenwood Lake became accessible to all, and its popularity boomed. The lake’s legacy still lives on today with many choosing to book an RV in Orange County for a fantastic lakeside getaway!

Discover Greenwood Lake

Getting Outdoors

Fed by a multitude of springs and brooks, Greenwood Lake is one of New York’s largest freshwater lakes. With several marinas and public boat ramps scattered along the lake’s 70-mile long shoreline, many choose to rent a camper near Greenwood Lake to get out and about on the tranquil waters. Travelers without their own boat can head to Willow’s Point or DeFeo Marina, both of which rent out kayaks, canoes, motorized vessels and even jet skis for the day! Both marinas also hire out fishing equipment for any keen fishers renting an RV nearby. Set up base in a secluded bay along the shoreline to catch some of the lurking crappie and other panfish, or head out into the deeper waters to catch a trophy-sized largemouth bass or musky!

Motorhome camping at Greenwood Lake isn’t just about fishing and boating; there is also a small beach to relax on for those that would rather admire the water from a distance. This sandy beach is part of the Thomas P. Morahan Waterfront and can be found on lake’s northern shores. Although the beach is a paid facility, it offers visitors ample space to soak in the sunshine as well as plenty of picnic tables, a volleyball area, and well-maintained restrooms.

When you go camping at Greenwood Lake during the winter, there are a plethora of seasonal activities to get stuck into, such as ice fishing, skiing, and snowboarding. Mount Peter, standing at 1,220-foot tall, looms over the northern portion of Greenwood Lake and is popular for its alpine tracks. Originally opened in 1936, this is considered to be one of the oldest skiing regions in New York! The mountain’s well-equipped ski area has over fifteen trails to choose from and a terrain park served by three double chair lifts and two carpet lifts.

Camping at Greenwood Lake

Unfortunately, RV camping at Greenwood Lake is limited, and there are only two campgrounds within a thirty-minute drive of the lake itself. Head eastwards from Greenwood Lake in your RV rental, and you will find Beaver Pond Campground nestled into the heart of Harriman State Park. While there are no hookup facilities here, travelers are provided with a picnic table, fire ring and communal bathroom facilities. Although a basic campground, campers will be rewarded with secluded spots and a peaceful nights sleep.

Alternatively, campers can head westwards from Greenwood Lake towards Warwick and the Black Bear Campground. With an abundance of modern amenities and full hookups for your luxury rental RV, consider staying here if you don’t fancy forfeiting your creature comforts. As well as immaculate washrooms and spacious sites, RV users can enjoy the large heated swimming pool, modern children’s playground, and free WiFi and cable facilities.

Exploring the Area

Although Greenwood Lake is surrounded by spectacular state parks and picturesque landscapes, several cities are just a short drive away and provide a great day of family-friendly entertainment.

Cornwall is just a thirty-minute drive away from Greenwood Lake and is home to the Storm King Art Center. This 500-acre outdoor museum boasts an impressive collection of large-scale sculptures that has been growing since 1960. The museum celebrates the work of both local and regional artists with a selection of permanent and rotating exhibitions on display. Take a walk around these extensive grounds, exploring all four sections: The North Woods, Museum Hill, The Meadows, and The South Fields.

Just around the corner from this unique sculpture garden is the equally as interesting Hudson Highlands Nature Museum. Opened in 1959, this nature museum is dedicated to educating both children and adults alike about how our actions can affect the natural environment around us. As well as perusing the displays in The Wildlife Education Center, visitors can sign up for one of the daily workshops or weekend nature programs, both of which are great fun for the whole family.

Situated on an island in the Hudson River, the Bannerman Castle is a must-visit for any history buffs with an RV rental near Greenwood Lake. The beautifully turreted castle was once the property of a Scottish-born arms dealer who bought the house in 1900 as a safe storage site for his surplus of munitions supplies. In 1920 the house fell into disrepair when 200 pounds of shells and powder exploded, destroying a huge portion of the complex. There is no way of reaching this island alone; instead, catch a boat from Newburg or admire the castle from the Hudson River on a half-day kayaking tour.
